[O72]Old And New Terrorism
by Dina Karan, Din
“We have designed and created jewelry pieces that are fun and whimsical but can also be used at work or at formal events," says Marina Alteza, co-owner of Tila & Co. “Our designs reflect modern and vintage styles that allow women of all ages to feel beautiful, special and unique."

New this year, Tila is pleased to introduce a new direction in jewelry design. Using existing antique, vintage and art deco pieces sourced from a variety of locations, Tila’s head designer and co-owner, Irene Alteza, uses the original piece as inspiration and updates it with modern materials to create something that fuses old and new.

“So far, our customers have been thrilled with our collection," continues Marina Alteza. “Every woman is unique and so are the items we create. We offer handmade jewelry pieces that are timeless and that you won’t find in stores, but at reasonable prices."

The inspiration behind the creation of Tila & Co. came from personal experience. The Alteza sisters, both fashion-oriented from an early age, found as they got older how difficult it was to keep up with the changing styles from year to year. The unique jewelry they admired were often out of their price range. They discovered that they could create their own pieces and were pleasantly surprised to find they were the recipients of compliments from friends, co-workers and complete strangers. Compliments turned into orders and quickly Tila & Co. was born.

For Tila’s handcrafted jewelry collection, Irene enjoys working with sterling silver, gold-filled, semi-precious gemstones, vintage components, glass beads, and crystals from around the world, which includes handcrafted necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Every piece in the collection is designed and manufactured in Toronto, Canada.

Founded by two Canadian sisters, Tila & Co. strives to bring out the creative inner spirit in women by incorporating design and fun into everyday life. Tila invites you to sparkle and shine and embrace your uniqueness through custom handmade accessories designed for today's woman. For more information, visit the website at www.tilajewelry.com.

It has been that the totality of men's jewelry was confined to a father giving his son a pocket watch owned by his father and his father before. There are commercial slogans that say watches are not owned they are merely kept for safekeeping for the next generation. It is admittedly a warm thought. It brings out our filial instincts, the importance of family and all those paternal feelings.

Men's jewelry, in the recent past has been restricted to nothing more than watches, cufflinks and the occasional necklace. This is after all accepted by the public as the masculine aspect of jewelry. Men who uses more than the ordinary necklace were looked upon by society as oddities. Men who go as far as pierce an ear will be chased out of town with burning torches. And so men agreed that jewelry are meant to be worn by women. It's a way of life they cannot comprehend.

But it is not the case nowadays. The frumpy ways of our forefathers has now been challenged with the times. If women are now allowed to vote, why shouldn't men be allowed to wear all the jewelry they want? And it cannot be considered a shocking overturning of tradition because men, in ancient times sport jewelry from head to foot to signify power and wealth or their status in society.

Sure, watches are a necessity. They are items that never go out of style. But enough with the boring gold clasp or leather strap, the time is ripe for diamond stud clasps or gold and crystals straps. Men are now given a wide array of choices, from watch faces inlaid with pearls to glow-in-the-dark hour hands. For the adventurous, watches with leather and metal studs are popular. For the sporty, waterproof diver's watches is the way to go.

The classic allure of the gentlemen is in the details and timeless tuxedo is not complete without cufflinks. The beauty of cufflinks is its subtlety. Commonly made of pearls, it can dress up any outfit. Men whose life are public and require constant galas and expensive dinners have a whole collection of cufflinks customized to their every need. Gold and silver links can be made into miniatures copies of their favorite cars or landmarks. It can function not only as a beautiful decorative bit but also as a conversation piece, sure to strike up conversation with a gorgeous lady.

And to complete the elegant man about town, a ring is in order. Our gentleman will require a ring with a simple design, probably one in white gold that shows his devotion to his wife. Or he could be single and will opt for a showier piece of Italian gold and ruby. He could be a proud Ivy League graduate and display his class ring made in yellow gold with diamond slivers and the sculpted emblem of his school. Our man could also be the rebel millionaire and will sport a silver and gold dragon-shaped ring with rubies for fiery eyes.

Men's jewelry has come a long way from the inherited pocket watch. It has now become a way of life for both men and women. The trends today show that we don't need to turn our back to tradition to move forward with men's jewelry because the old can incorporated in the new.
