by Steven A Johnson, Ste
Most average dogs will chew toys, sleep or bark occasionally when they are left alone. They mostly do what they would normally do if you were home with them. Separation anxiety can cause leaving the house or room to be a difficult or emotional chore. Dogs with separation anxiety will whine, howl, bark, pace, chew furniture, rip carpeting up, eat through dry wall, destroy the blinds, dig up plants, and scratch at doors and windows.

This separation anxiety can cause a lot of havoc in one's life. Not only can it destroy thousands of dollars in furnishings but they can hurt themselves, or make your neighbors upset to listening to our anxious pet. Dogs are pack animals by nature, so they wish to be with people all the time. Most adult dogs can be left alone for 8 hrs or longer if they can go out side to eliminate. They won't be happy by themselves and they will get bored by they manage just fine or cause problems.

Signs of distress happen only when your dog doesn't have access to you is defined as separation anxiety. Normally when he thinks you are getting ready to leave. Or showing signs of distress when you put your dog in a room and close the door behind you. If your dog is anxious all the time then taking a look at another cause may be suggested.

Separation anxiety in dogs could be caused by brain chemistry. A dog may have the condition triggered by stress. Some breeds are more likely to suffer from separation anxiety that others. Doing some research about your breed will help to pinpoint the problem. Depending on the case the treatment can be anything from behavioral modification to prescription antidepressants from the vet.

Setting up a video camera before you leave the house will tell you exactly how your pet behaves when you leave the house. Is he happy chewing the couch just having fun like a teenager parties when the parents are away or does he look distressed and panicked??

Storm phobia is another anxiety disorder that affects a lot of dogs. Dogs that are storm phobic whine, tremble, seek the comfort of their owners, try to escape if confined, hide under furniture, and engage in frenzied chewing, scratching or digging. Golden Retrievers are commonly known to be affected by this most but they are not the only breed.

It's not known what part of a thunderstorm scares dogs most. It could be something to do with the drop in barometer pressure, electrical charges, getting shocked by the ground or as simple as loud crashes and bright flashes or lightening. A diagnosis for storm phobia is pretty much an obvious one but for any dog and any treatment you plan to give your dog should be consulted with your veterinarian with a routine check up for you pet.

Is it really true that dog is the man and woman best friend? That is a fact that many dog owners could not argue against. When you own a dog and love him or her, there are few things that feel as great as to holding your dog's warm body next to you, and to see the look of love and admiration on your dog's eyes. Not only are dogs loyal but they also demonstrate unconditional love and affection for their owners. Unfortunately there are times when the dog is not as angelical as you though he would be. In these situations not everything about dogs is that great, this is when dogs can also be a source of anxiety for their owners, especially when they become destructive.

Dog owners believe that the reason why their beloved dogs misbehave is because they are left alone, and the dogs want to pay back their owners for been left alone. This could not be farther from the truth, reality is that dogs misbehave and becomes destructive out of boredom. Dogs have a lot of energy, and when this energy does not get burn, they have to do something about it. The reason, why dogs get to misbehave at home is because they are bored out of their minds, and they are craving activity and exercise.

Given the fact that dogs will have the tendency to misbehaved if left alone or if not given the proper amount of exercise, the owner needs to understand that dogs need to have plenty of activity. In the unfortunate situation when the owner ignores the dogs call for more activity and ignores the signs of boredom on the dog, the dog might turn into aggression toward other dogs, or toward human. The dog can also develop anxiety.

Dogs are not always aggressive just because they became like that out of boredom. Dogs can become aggressive if their owners mistreat them. Other causes of dog aggression include fear, pain, or other medical problems, like hormonal imbalances. When a dog is aggressive toward another dog you could be certain that he might harm the other dog if the situation is not properly control on time. Signs to observe on dog aggression are excessive barking, howling and growling.

Another problem that dog owners often confront is that one of separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety can be very destructive and can cause a great deal of damage to the owner's furniture, rugs and even appliances, depending on the size of the dog. Dogs that suffer from separation anxiety will also whine and bark constantly when the owner is not around.

Remember that dogs want care, love and affection and that their destructive manners should not be considered a way of the dog paying back the owner for being left alone at home for many hours. In addition, dogs who suffer from anxiety might have other reasons why they suffer from this condition, and do not always have to be associated with the owner leaving the dog alone. Other reasons for separation anxiety in dogs include abuse by prior owners, been scared of loud noises or even been removed from their mother to early as a puppy.

So, dog aggressiveness and separation anxiety in dogs are two major behavioral problems that had better be corrected right away because if not, these problems may exacerbate causing a lot of irritation to the owner and saddening for the dog.
