[O331]Orientation For New Employees
by Gareth, Gar
When a new employee joins your team, it is important to correctly welcome them to your company. Having good relationship with your employees from the start will build your company loyalty, and having a low company turn-around is one of the things that can help you to build a successful business. You can help to put your best foot forward by offering your employees a few gifts when they join your team. Here are some important ideas for gifts that you should always offer.

One of the most important gifts you can give to a new employee is promotional umbrellas. Although promotional umbrellas can be given to your potential clients at events like conferences and fairs, you should also order some for your employees. Why? Well, your employees are the most likely to actually carry the umbrella, especially when on business trips promoting your products or services and when traveling to and from work.

And the more your employees carry the promotional umbrellas, the more they are worth. As your employee walks down the street with a promotional umbrella bearing your logo, he or she acts as a walking billboard. The umbrella will also keep your employee dry and, in effect, looking their best.

Other promotional products can be given to employees as well. When a new worked joins your team or department, offer to them items that make sense for the job they will be doing. For example, you may wish to include an office clock if they will be working in the office. If your employees are required to wear a head covering, give them a promotional hat or ball cap. If they will meet with a number of clients over a round of gold, consider not only a promotional umbrella, but also a promotional golf umbrella to shade the gold bag. Cater to your employees and remember that convenience is key.

No matter what promotional products you choose, remember that choosing items of a high quality is important. Your employees are representatives for your company, and your printed umbrellas and other promotional items help to brand your company. Plus, remember that your employees will carry them often, so be prepared to replace any damaged or worn promotional umbrellas. You should always put your best foot forward with your promotional products. After all, if you have shoddy, broken, or unattractive promotional products, what does that say about your products or services? You don't want people to remember you company name or logo for the wrong reasons!
New employees are a gamble?you can never be sure if or how they will fit with your company. However, remember that working for a new company is a gamble for your employee as well. Start your relationship with gifts to your new employee, and you can be sure that he or she will work for you and remain with your company. In the business world, a little niceness can go a long way!

Congratulations. You've successfully recruited your new employee. Here are some suggestions to help you start off on the right foot and NOT have that foot walk out of the door!

BEFORE the first day, the Manager should send the employee a welcome note. It doesn't have to be fancy just sincere! It should list the time the new person (NP for the rest of this article) is expected to arrive and where to go, the phone number and extension of the manager and of course, directions to the office. This can be e-mailed or sent regular mail.

BEFORE the first day, make sure the NP's workstation is ready Is the computer up and ready? Are there supplies - pens, pencils, paper available? Is the phone hooked up and ready to go? Is all work related HR or other material there?

BEFORE the first day, assign another employee to serve as a guide and mentor to the NP. This person should be a very good worker so that your NP is getting information from the best source next to the manager. Also a person who is satisfied with the job may encourage the NP that joining your company was/is a good idea.

ON the first day, plan a welcome for the NP. Examples of this would be:

• Give a welcome card signed by all the people in the unit.
• Host a reception where you serve donuts or bagels and introduce the NP to everyone.
• Order pizza and have a group lunch.
• Put a small plant on the NP's desk with a balloon attached.
• Make sure everyone knows there is a NP and encourage them to take some time to personally welcome them.

ON the first day, make sure the NP is shown where the restrooms are and knows the times for breaks, lunch, etc. If you have scheduled other meetings for the NP, tell them and write the schedule so they are not caught off guard. The mentor should physically take the NP to the location and pick them up if necessary.

The important thing to remember is that there may be a tremendous amount of anxiety that goes along with the first day on the job. If you want to retain your NP, make the first day experience (and indeed every day) as positive as possible!
