[S285]Sell To Make Money On Ebay
by Kritika Sharma, Kri

One of the biggest challenges that face every growing eBay business is making the decision about adding the first new employees. To make money on eBay is much easier when there aren't employees who must be paid before profits are computed. However, there is a point in time when the right decision is to add extra help.

Start by examining the business for opportunities to improve overall operating efficiency. Make the necessary improvements. Not adding the expenses associated with outside help is important to make money on eBay. The more efficiently you can operate your business the better. Eliminate redundant tasks. Improve the flow of every operation. Eliminate all of the non-value added tasks.

Next examine outside support options such as contract support. The rule of thumb should be to transfer tasks that take owner time, yet produce the lowest income. Leverage the owner's time toward tasks that make money on eBay. There are several online sites where administrative and support tasks can be listed for bid. One-time tasks, such as creating a booklet or writing sales copy are ideal for this approach as well. Be sure to check references on anyone you consider transferring tasks to. Sellers need to continually be on the lookout for creative ways to find products to sell on eBay. They need to look at products and methods of packaging those products to spur added sales. Creating sale packages that contain multiple counts of the same items is one of those creative methods to make money on eBay.

Grouping identical items together into packages is an especially effective way to make money on eBay in situations where more than one item is normally desired and purchased. For example most people don't have a single towel in a specific color and pattern in their home. They will buy sets. If you were selling towels, packaging them into matching groups might be an effective method of selling.

For buyers these packages can save time since all of the items are already packaged together. In the right situations buyers will also save considerable money on shipping costs.

For sellers there are also many advantages. Rather than pulling packing and shipping all of the items individually, there is time savings in selling them as a package. The average sales price of each listing also increases since a single listing contains multiple items. Rather than selling four, five or six auctions of one item, all items were brought together into a single auction. These are all critical pieces of the puzzle for anyone who wants to make money on eBay.

This strategy will not work in every situation. Some testing will be required to verify that it will work for you. We have tried it with very different market niches and have found that we are able to make just as much for each item as we were getting when selling the items individually. It has turned into a great way to make money on eBay for us.

Finally to make money on eBay, examine options for bringing part-time and/or full-time employees onboard. After examining the previous two options, consider adding an employee to help off-load tasks. Check all the local, state and federal laws and regulations regarding conducting a business form your home first. There are also rules and regulations regarding employees. Be sure that you understand and adhere to all of them.

Step 1: Identify your market. Take a while to sit and watch for what sells and what doesn't out of the items you're interested in. Don't forget to keep a note of any market research data you come across as this could be very useful to you later on. You'll probably see the 'sweet spots' quite quickly - those one or two items that always seem to sell for a good price.

Step 2: Watch the competition. Before you invest any money, see what the other sellers in your category are up to, and what their strategies are. Go through their auctions with fine-toothed comb, uncovering any flaws that may exist, because this will give you your opportunity to move in on them.

Step 3: Find a product: When looking for suppliers for the product that you intend selling, don't be afraid to ring round a few. This will ensure that you get the best possible deal. If the eBay prices you've seen are higher than the supplier's, then you're all set.

Step 4: Start small: Don't throw thousands at your idea straight away - get started slowly, see what works and what doesn't, and learn as you go. Remember that it's very cheap to try out even the craziest ideas on eBay, and who knows, they might just work!

Step 5: Test and repeat. Keep trying different methods until you find one that works. Then repeat it, over and over again. The chances are that you've just found a good niche.

Step 6: Work out a business plan: A business plan doesn't need to be anything formal, just a few pages that outline the market opportunity you've spotted, your strategy, strengths and weaknesses of the plan and a brief budget. This is more for you than it is for anyone else.

Step 7: Invest and expand: This is the time to throw money at the problem. Buy inventory, and start spending more time on your business. Set a goal number of sales each week, increasing it each time.

Step 8: Make it official: Once you've made a few thousand dollars worth of sales, you should really register yourself as a business. Don't worry, it's not expensive or hard to do - a lawyer is the best person to help you through the process.

Step 9: Automate: You'll probably find that you're writing the same things again and again in emails or item descriptions. This is the time to give up on the manual method and turn to automated software that can create listings for you, and respond to completed auctions and payments with whatever message you provide.

Step 10: Never give up: Even when it looks like it's all going wrong, don't stop trying until you succeed. If you keep working at it then you'll almost always find that you make a real breakthrough just when things are starting to look desperate.

Once you get into the swing of things, you might start thinking that you should quit your job and take up eBay selling full time. But it's not always as easy as that - there are all sorts of factors that you need to consider. You must ensure that your eBay success is a regular occurrence and not just a flash-in-the-pan before taking that final step. Have patience, it WILL come.
