Today there are so many different types of riding toys it would be very hard to pick just one. In the early days there were only a few, for example, one of the earliest was the little red wagon, and if you were lucky enough to own one you can remember I'm sure, how much fun it was to ride in your wagon and be pulled along by a friend or a family member. These wagons are still available today, now being made by several different companies. In the early days I believe Radio flyer was one of the first companies to make the little red wagon. Today one can find almost any type of riding toy that comes to mind. There are riding tractors, race cars, airplanes, riding trucks, bicycles, and just about anything that comes to mind you will be able to find in a riding toy today.
There are many types of battery powered riding toys also available. For the younger set there are still many of the old stand by toys around, like the rocking horse, bicycles with training wheels for the little ones just starting out. Others would include things like push-pedal type cars, toy ride-on fire engines, lawn tractors, and on the newer side, I even saw a motorcycle rocking horse the other day.
In the powered type riding toys, there are many to choose from, like a battery powered jeep 4x4, 3-wheel motorcycles, and many others all made on a smaller scale for the younger kids. You might want to purchase some safety equipment for the beginner here as many of the battery powered toys do move along faster than the pedal type.
Today there are toy copies of many of the cars we drive everyday, like the Ford Mustang, Cadillac Escalade, Jeep Wrangler, and in Motorcycles, there are copies of Harley Davidson, Kawasaki, and a few others. There is also a copy of some of the Monster trucks, like Grave Digger, and Big Foot. All of these copies are sure sellers in the riding toy market today.
On the girls side there are copies of a Barbie Cadillac Escalade, A Barbie Jammin' Jeep Wrangler, and the Dora Explorer Jeep Wrangler. All of these are big sellers. This is just a few of the new riding toys in the stores today, many more will come I'm sure in the near future. Keep in mind most of these toys are not cheap, some of the bigger riding toys can set you back two are three hundred dollars and more for name brand products. All of the major discount stores carry most of the name brands, if for some reason you can't find what you are looking for; check online. All of the major stores have a website, where most of their riding toys will be displayed, along with prices.
One thing is for sure, if you have not checked out the toy stores lately, you will be surprised and I believe a little amazed at all of the new riding toys that are available.
friend of mine, who shall remain nameless, recently went all out at Christmas time to buy her child the latest and most expensive motorized outdoor riding toy she could find; a John Deere jeeplike toy with a driver's seat and a passenger seat and a space in the back to carry toys or anything else that caught the child's fancy. The parents knew the kid loved John Deere, so they thought he would love his little riding toy. The problem was, after spending all this money on this expensive toy, the kid wouldn't ride it. In fact, he didn't want anything to do with it. What's a parent to do in a case like that?
Not every child will have this problem, of course, but it's a pretty good bet that if it's the first time a child has had a motorized riding toy, it's going to scare him at first. While you and I might not think of a child's riding toy as particularly powerful, think about it from the point of view of the child for a moment. This vehicle is moving forward on some power other than his; it isn't as easy for a young child to connect 'let off on the accelerator' with 'stop' as it is for him to connect 'stop pushing this scooter' with 'stop', for instance. If a child gets into a motorized toy without knowing exactly what it will do, how to make it do it, and how to make it stop doing it, the child is going to feel that the toy is out of control (even if it's only 'out of control' at two miles an hour and you're right there with him), and he's going to be a little frightened.
The best cure, of course, is prevention; take the time to explain to him what it will do, how to make it go, how to make it stop, what kind of noise it will make, how fast it will go, et cetera. You may wish to have the child sit in the passenger seat and use your hand to press the accelerator to begin with, until they can see how pushing down makes it go and letting off makes it stop. If you could somehow drive it the first time and have the child in the passenger seat watching you, that would be best, but unfortunately, that isn't really possible.
If the child has already tried to ride it on their own, though, and been so scared that they won't touch it, it will probably take time to get them used to it so that they feel comfortable enough to try again. Encourage the child to just sit in the toy without moving at all; have them make 'motor sounds' and perhaps turn the steering wheel. Next, have them sit in the toy while you push it. Again, have them make motor noises (and make them with them if you possibly can) and turn the steering wheel. Demonstrate, first with them watching from the sidelines and later with them in the passenger seat, how pushing the accelerator makes it go and letting off makes it stop. And above all, be patient with them. Eventually, in their own good time, the child will feel comfortable enough with the toy to want to try it on his own. And once he does, it's a good bet that he won't stop.
