[S146]School For Truck Driving
by Sandy Maseko, San
On truck driving shows, many of the different vendors offer brochures, informational packets, and even have drawings for various prizes. You can take your time looking around and seeing what options you have. Chances are you may discover some very useful information that you can use to make your truck driving profession easier or to safe you money.

On the truck shows, it may be a great opportunity to tell these various manufactures what needs aren't being met for the truck drivers out there. They will take that information back to their company and hopefully start looking for ways to meet those needs. They know if they can offer something for the trucking industry then it will sell well so they aren't too worried about taking a risk when the requests are coming from those in the industry.

While you will find a truck driving show very educational, it will also provide you with a chance to relax and enjoy others with similar interests. In most instances various portions of your visit to a truck driving show are tax deductible so make sure you discuss this with your tax preparer.

Women drivers

You may find some people out there who ridicule women truck drivers as they think it is a joke. Yet most of these women are very competent behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler and they know all about how to keep their truck in good working condition. Some trucking companies are hesitant to hire women even though they can't come right out and say this due to discrimination laws. They worry about the safety of the women while out there on the road. They also worry about harassment they may encounter by their male employees.

There is a non-profit organization known as Women in Trucking that works hard to advocate for women's rights in this profession that is dominated by men. They work hard to acknowledge the accomplishments of women in the trucking industry and to help the overcome any barriers to employment. Over the last five years they have worked hard to help women find more jobs in the trucking industry and have been very successful.

While it is harder for a woman truck driver to be accepted for many positions, don't give up. There are some trucking companies such as Mary Kay Cosmetics that prefer women drivers. Think of the thrill of being the driving force behind a pink semi!

And what a way of life it is! You get to drive one of the most powerful machines on the road; you look through your windshield and you see a never-ending, constantly changing movie unfold in front you every second; you get to travel the length and width of the country without having to pay a cent; you go to breathtaking beautiful remote corners of the country that you had not even heard about before. These are the thoughts that go through most would-be trucker's minds as they sing, ?A trucker's life for me.?

Here's the catch however, you never know which part of the country you are likely to be in the next week and sometimes even the next day. If you are single, foot-loose and fancy free and have wanderlust in your blood; this could be a good thing. But if you are a family man, it may not be so easy. You have to be willing to stay weeks away from your family and will often miss important occasions including weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, school functions and funerals. The big question is, ?Can you handle that??

Trucking is not like most other jobs that you just apply for and hope to get. It can get very lonely and very tiring on the job. The only people you are likely to talk to are other lonely truckers who you meet at roadside diesel caf's. It's a stressful life for sure. There are those days when you'll be kicking yourself wondering what you are doing all alone, miles away from the laughter and warmth of your loved ones. But then, there are other days that will more than make up for it. If you can handle the bad along with the good, being a trucker can be one of the most adventurous and exciting of all jobs.

All truck driving jobs are not the same. There's much more to this way of life than just sitting behind the wheel, and you have to decide what it is you want from this job before diving headlong into it. Some truck driving jobs could include only short hauls and others could involve long, long hauls. Some jobs would require you to also be involved in picking up and delivering your load. The key to loving your truck-driving job is to take your time researching your options and then choosing one that best suits your requirements and preferences.

Once you've figured out what it is you are looking for from your truck driving job, research the different trucking companies that offer these options. It is important to look into the background of the company and investigate certain issues, especially the company's history. Check out where they are headquartered, how long they have been in business and whether it has any kind of specialization. Most importantly, you should look into how the company treats its employees and whether or not it has been involved in any lawsuits. Look into the details of the lawsuit before you join the company; you do not want to get embroiled in anything unsavory.

Once you've made up your mind that the trucking life is indeed for you, all you need is a CDL or Commercial Drivers License and you are on your way.
