[S140]Scholarships For College Students
by Elise Fisher, Eli
Believe me when I say that you definitely don't want to be eating macaroni & cheese and Raman noodles for dinner every night. This is really hard on your body. Anyway, contrary to popular belief, cooking doesn't have to be complicated. The only thing you need are the right recipes and an creative mind.

Recipe books exist that were created especially for college students. Consider purchasing The College Cookbook, Cooking Outside the Pizza Box, The Healthy College Cookbook, or another college cook book. You'll certainly be glad you did.

For some people, recipes just aren't their thing. No worries! When dinner time rolls around simply find a few items that go together and throw them in a pot or frying pan. Try chicken, rice, and steamed carrots. Or ranch style beans, corn, hominy, garbonzo beans, (leave the juices for a stew) ground beef, tomatoes, and diced green chili. Add a bit of salt & pepper and throw some cheddar cheese on top.

Here are other simple meals: spaghetti with sauce, chicken Alfredo, chicken Caesar salad, Stone soup (throw anything you want in it), hotdogs, macaroni tuna salad, three bean salad, or try a crock pot meal!

An additional piece of advice: absolutely do not skip breakfast! Cereal, fruit, bagels, and oatmeal make quick and simple breakfasts. Or try pancakes, muffins and biscuits. If you can't make them on your own, use a mix! Skipping breakfast is hard on your metabolism. Avoid it as much as possible. If you're really in a hurry grab a granola bar or an apple, but get something in your stomach.

Generally speaking, whenever we think about college we think freedom and fun. Though, there is nothing fun about daily stressing over your finances and there is no freedom in being chained to an ever-increasing pile of debt. Managing your money will help you avoid these stressful situations. You're going to have to start sometime during your life and the sooner the better.

What students should know about managing their money:

In order to manage your money properly you must create a budget. The purpose of a budget is to outline a practical plan for spending the limited money that most college students have. Since your income and expenses are always fluctuating, whatever budget you choose needs to allow for flexibility.

The first step you'll want to take is writing down your sources of income. This can include income from work, grants, scholarships, allowance from home, etc. The second step you should take is writing down all your expenses. Split them into two catagories: fixed and flexible.

Fixed expenses are exact amounts that are due on specific dates. Flexible expenses are amounts of money that fluctuate depending on your needs and wants.

Example Fixed Expenses:

- Housing

- Car payment

- Health insurance

- Tuition

- Cell phone

Example Flexible Expenses:

- Books

- Transportation

- Going over on your cell phone minutes or long distance telephone calls

- Social expenses (movies, dates, football games, etc)

- Personal expenses (clothing, food, health costs, domestic supplies, haircuts, etc.)

Calculate all the income and expenses you have. Now look it over. Do your expenses exceed your income? If this is the case, you should think about how you can increase your income or reduce your expenses (or a little of both). This process may seem elementary, but it's necessary if you desire to stay out of debt during your college years.

It is going to take some sacrifice to reduce your expenses. Many college students are used to spending their money impulsively. This type of poor money management will lead to financial slavery. Here are some helpful tips that will assist you in reducing your expenses:

- Pay your bills on time

- Stand against peer pressure

- Buy used text books

- Shop at discount stores

- Use coupons

- Stop eating out and buying junk food

- Share an apartment

Each college student will require a personalized budget that fits his or her needs. Nevertheless, basic budgets can be found all over the internet, in financial books or just ask your parents to help you create one. Don't let debt to chain you down. Form a budget, use it, and be willing to sacrifice to stay out of debt.
