[B296]Before After Nose Surgery
by Dave Stringham, Dav
The nasal septum, (the structure that separates the two nostrils inside the nose), is composed of cartilage and bone. It may become deviated or twisted, either through the trauma of birth or as the result of an accidental injury. This deviation may alter the pattern of air flow through the nose, making it more difficult to breathe. In addition, the nose may appear crooked with a "hump".

Often, a surgical procedure used to correct breathing through the nose also improves its appearance. Reduction of the "hump", refinement of the nasal tip, narrowing of the width, and straightening of the nose are combined into one procedure.

In order to eliminate visible scarring, the surgery is done entirely from within the nostrils. The goal is to achieve a more natural appearance, without a "turned up" or artificial look.

Patients usually go to the surgery center in the morning of surgery for this outpatient procedure. The duration of surgery for this procedure is approximately one hour. General anesthesia is utilized; therefore the patient is entirely asleep. A small splint is applied to the nose after surgery for protection and to reduce swelling in the early postoperative period. This splint is usually removed between five to seven days after surgery; bruising is variable. We do not routinely pack the nose postoperatively. This procedure adds to the patients comfort after surgery.

After surgery, patients are taken to the recovery room and monitored until they are fully awake. There is minimal discomfort during the postoperative period. Following recovery, patients are taken home either by a friend or relative, who will then stay with them for that evening. A return visit to the office the next day is scheduled for follow-up evaluation. The approach to nasal surgery varies from individual to individual.

Patients may have a specific area of the nose they want improved. Ethnic characteristics must be respected when enhancing the appearance of the African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic or the Middle Eastern nose.

Facial proportions may be divided into thirds. From the hairline to the top of the nose represents the upper third, the full length of the nose is the middle third, and from the base of the nose to the chin is the lower third. Other procedures can be performed with nasal surgery to establish these proportions and improve the final result. These options may include a chin augmentation, eyelid surgery, or even a facelift.

A chin implant is a device that can be surgically positioned to enlarge the chin from within the mouth so that no scars are visible. Placement of the implant adds approximately one half hour to the nasal procedure.

Although a Rhinoplasty operation may be rather complicated, the surgical procedure can usually be completed within an hour since it is quite a minor operation targetted at reshaping the nose of the patient.

Since the shape of the nose of every person's face is different and each patient wants her nose to be shaped differently, the cosmetic plastic surgeon must have extensive knowledge of a wide range of modern surgical skills and techniques so that he can choose the most suitable treatment for each Rhinoplasty patient. Cosmetic surgeons say that almost every aesthetically imperfect nose can be made more beautiful and elegant by a Rhinoplasty surgical procedure.

The nose is the most prominent feature on a person's face and that is the reason why a well executed Rhinoplasty operation can have great impact on a person wanting to look more beautiful and elegant.

Many Rhinoplasty patients suffer from unsymmetrical nose feature and the patients they are aware that their nose imperfection is very noticeable. Many sensitive patients may even suffer from psychological depression because this imperfection. This is amongst the many reasons why getting a nose job done up is fast gaining popularity.

Many opinion polls survey on patients who have undergone Rhinoplasty aesthetic nose surgeries showed that the patietnt's confidence and self esteem are boosted successful nose operations.

The success of an aesthetic nose cosmetic surgery will depend on many factors including anatomical particularities of a patient's skin and sub-skin structure (how the skin heals itself) and the patient's likely reaction to the operation are very important.

A successful nose aesthetic surgery also depends very much on pre operation consultation and medical examination of the patient. This is when the patient's mental vision of her nose is precisely determined and matched with the various possibilities as a result of the surgical procedure.

Rhinoplasty Surgical Procedure

An cosmetic nose surgery is preceded by a routine examination of the patient which will include some blood tests and an ECG.Prior to the operation, photographs the patient are taken. This is standard routine practice before any cosmetic surgery.

The cosmetic plastic surgery is a completely painless procedure because of the use of modern anesthesia. If the operation is done successfully, there may not be even any scars on the patients face.

During Rhinoplasty operation, the nose bone is sculpted using special surgical instruments. Usually patients want their nose to be made smaller but it can be made bigger if the patient wants it otherwise.

When the desired size and shape are obtained, a nasal splint is put on the nose. The splint stays in place for a week to let the nasal structures heal.

During the first three days after the operation, the patient will need a nasal packing which help to prevent bleeding and supports the new shape and form of the nose. The Rhinoplasty operation is done under enhanced local anesthesia. The patient is also given some sedative to reduce stress and tension during the operation. After the eighth day the splint will be removed and the patient will be the owner of a new nose shaped to her requirements.
