[S187]Search Engine Marketing Affiliate
by Prince, Pri
I know they need even more help when I ask them to describe their target market and they say: "everyone in the world".

I know it's going to be difficult to get quality traffic for this client's web site when their business has multiple products and services with very little relevance to each other.

Lack of focus is the most common mistake I see in business in general and from people trying to optimise their web pages. It's a natural mistake to want to rank on as many keyword phrases as possible.

The logic is that you want to get as many visitors as possible so that you can present your compelling offer to them and hopefully convert them into customers.

This is the "general store" or "shotgun" approach and in the 90s during the era of keyword-stuffing, hidden text and doorway pages this approach worked pretty well.

The trouble is that traffic does not equal sales and these days it's just too hard to optimise a web page for multiple competitive keyword phrases.

The most successful SEO campaigns I have done were focused on one keyword phrase per page to a well defined geographic area for a very focused business offering.

They were successful in ranking well for search terms that motivated buyers in the target service area were searching on.

Users of search engines have become far more sophisticated with their search terms. For example, say someone living in Sydney was interested in buying a new canvas awning for their house. Five to ten years ago they may have searched on a single word: "awning" or even "canvas awning".

These days they are more likely to search on a complex phrase like "Sydney canvas awning suppliers" or "canvas awnings Sydney" or even "Sydney awning installers".

They have learnt through trial and error that by adding search modifiers like "canvas" and "Sydney" the most relevant results will appear.

How do you search for information on the Internet? I bet you are using more refined search terms to save time and improve the quality of your results.

The golden rule to remember is that the longer the search phrase - the more motivated the buyer. And that's what most web site owners want, motivated buyers and shoppers rather than browsers and accidental visitors.

Through investing time in keyword research it is possible to identify search terms that do generate significant search volume and are easier to optimise for.

Google has some excellent free tools to help with that research. A search on "free keyword research tools" will also lead you to many others.

Once those phrases are identified and tested the best approach is to build a web page for each of those phrases.

Each web page should stand alone and have it's own unique navigation menu link, title tag, heading and sub-headings.

Search engine marketing is no different to any other human endevour, be it business, sport or the arts. Focus wins.

Marketing as an Affiliate is a trendy and high tech home business that is growing every day. Affiliate promoters advertise internet goods that are not their own to sell. The Internet business you are supporting will pay you a commission for each individual browser clicks from your site to their website, (Pay Per Click); each time a browser gives them contact information through your site, (pay-per-lead); or for each sale made through you, (pay-per-sale). This is a mutually beneficial deal for both the Internet business and you the affiliate marketer: the Internet business does not have to pay you until it makes sales, and the marketer can earn impressive commissions.

Be aware, not everyone succeeds at Marketing as an Affiliate. If you are contemplating getting into the online marketing game, here are a few basic tips that will assist you:

Choose a product you can stand behind. If you are not certain about the goods you have selected to market, do not try to pretend. Surfers won't be prepared to buy your service if you do not endorse it fully, and you can't if you do not genuinely believe in it. Do not be afraid to order sample products from an array of places. Phone the seller, explain that you're thinking about becoming an affiliate for them, and that you'd like to try their products out. Most Internet businesses would be glad to supply you with a free sample.

Ask questions. How do they monitor your referrals? Do they pay per click, etc? Do they provide promotional adverts to assist you getting started? Is it possible to monitor your referrals on their site as well? What is their commission payment schedule?

Use a Search engine friendly site. The success of your affiliate marketing website depends on the number of visitors. Search engines like sites that have a lot of appropriate content, have significant numbers of sites linking to them, and that have a fair quantity of traffic already. The data on your website is very relevant. You'll have to have at least one article for each high volume keyword phrase that is important to your website. But be careful, do not just magic up content for the sake of the search engines, or your potential customers won't stay around to click on your profitable affiliate links. It's right to include keyphrases, but create for visitors chiefly.

Create online articles. In order to spread the word about your website, it would be of benefit to learn to be a recognised authority in your niche. Publish articles about topics in your industry that your potential customers will be looking for, and post them to article banks. Remember to include a back link to your website so it will raise the number of links your website has and make your website more likeable to the search engines.

Using auto responders. When a visitor contacts you, you should have an autoresponder sequence in place to send them tidbits of interest, a discount code, information, anything that will get them coming back to your website.

Store email addresses. A good way to do this is to offer sign ups for your email updates. Never collect email addresses that potential customers haven't supplied you with absolute agreement to use. This can be construed as spam and is a breach of the Can Spam legislation. You can also offer incentives in exchange for their emails, e.g. give aways, entry into a contest etc.

Pre sell. This is a secret to running a successful Marketing as an Affiliate website. The role as an affiliate marketer should be to not to post aggressive sales letters pushing your affiliate service. The Internet business you're marketing will already have a similar salesletter on their website, which the browser will see after clicking their link from your website. As a substitute, create a website that caters to the interests of potential customers who you expect will want to procure the service. Include add ons, videos, blogs, informative articles, a discussion forum etc. Consider producing a web page recommending the service you are marketing, but do not focus your entire website on the product. As a substitute, make it a hot web page for potential customers who might click through and purchase it.

Marketing as an Affiliate is most often a very rewarding and profitable home business. However it's most definitely not for those who would like cash for no effort. A successful affiliate marketing business is most definitely a full time job, at least in the beginning. But if you keep to the advice above, it's likely to be worth your time.
