[S200]Search Engine Page Rank
by James Mackinlay, Jam
It seems that most people who have been marketing on the internet for a few years are under the impression that high page rank equals high search engine rankings this is entirely 100% untrue in fact in most cases page rank will not help your rankings at all!

There was a time when Google used page rank as a gauge that had a big effect on how or better said what positions a website would be ranked a example of this lets say we have two separate urls both are optimized for the search term internet marketing.

Well in the past more often than not the url with the higher page rank would end up getting a better ranking position in Googles search engine this caused big problems for Google as the internet grew and as a result they had to change how they ranked websites.

Page rank however is still important these days it mainly means that the higher page rank you have Google will spider your domain much more often also page rank still plays a small part in how your website gets ranked in Google.

To prove this point you can start searching in Google for almost anything and see that many sites with a page rank of 6 for a example are being beat in the rankings from sites with a page rank of only 2 and both are optimized for the same exact search terms!

You can look at it this way imagine if Google used page rank as a tool as in the past to rank websites in their search engine. And lets say that this page rank rating accounted for 50% of how they determined their rankings this means that all the new domains would never even stand a chance for years in getting any exposure.

So if that was the case then what good what it be to even try your hand at getting natural search results so you can see Google had to make changes in this page rank system for the good of everyone.

Also there has been a lot of talk about the age of domains basically the older it is the better in Googles eyes. I can tell you that this is not as important as it is being made out to be!

I have about 15 new domains only three to four months old that are in the top 10 positions of all the major search engines including Google.

To cover this topic in depth would require writing an entire book on the subject but when its all said and done dont get caught up in the page rank wars its really isnt worth the time or effort.

Dont be fooled by all the advertising out there that are saying they have all the answers in search engine otimization and how to get top rankings most are trying to sell you something. In other words dont buy into the hype that the search engines have changed the rules so much that the average person cannot obtain top rankings.

Just build a good quality website and follow the rules and in time you will see your page rank grow on its own and also you will never have to worry about getting banned from Google.

How changes in Search Engine Algorithms Can Affect YourPage Rank

All search engines, especially Google, perform regularupdates to their algorithms to improve the relevancy of search results. Theseupdates are sometimes relatively minor. However, some changes can causewebsites (even major websites) to drop from their search engine rankings likeflies. Every time a major search algorithm change takes place, SEO specialistand web masters all over the world scramble to achieve or maintain highranking.

For example, in November 2003, Google's infamous ?FloridaUpdate? caused millions of web pages to be dropped from Google's searchresults. Major updates have become the bane of website owners and SEOprofessionals alike; however it has become apparent that updates like these arenecessary to improve the relevancy of search results. Like it or not, continualtweaking is required by both the search engine developers and SEO professionalto continue delivering the relevant results.

Change is important. In the case of search engines, it isrequired. Algorithms cannot remain the same forever. For example, just becauseyou have ranked #1 for a certain keyword for six years doesn't mean that you?own? that ranking. New websites are being developed on a daily basis, some ofwhich may even be better than yours. Google algorithm update gives all playersa chance to compete on level ground.

How can you deal with algorithm updates when it?saffecting your Page Rank? Below are some tips you can follow:

Don't Panic ? getting apprehensive when you see your sitedropping from #1 to #20 is quite normal. But panicking will do no good. A lotof web masters think that they can control any given situation. The fact isthey can't. It's better to let the storm pass before you deal with the problem.Chances are, the sites that are really relevant will re-surface in therankings, unless they have been penalized for using black hat SEO techniques.

Keep the Website Properly Optimized ? keeping the metatag, title, body and other content properly optimized and having a significant external link inventory canhelp your website weather the storm of a major search engine algorithm update.

Refine your Keyword Selection ? some web masters may bethinking, ?Why fix it if it isn't broken?? However, ranking well with a certaingroup of keywords today doesn't necessarily mean that you'll rank well forever.Refine your keyword selection with related terms that searchers type in whenmaking a query.

Patience is Key ? you know that updates are always on thehorizon. Prepare your site for any algorithm changes by sticking with thebasics. Providing fresh content for your site, building backlinks, andestablishing a loyal traffic base will ensure that you'll have atechnically-sound website even when changes occur.
