If you don't have one, you run the risk of having an accident that can result in injury or death, especially if kids live in your home. Of course, it can also protect the gun from getting stolen, perhaps the most obvious reason for getting one.
Believe it or not, burglaries occur six times a minute on average. Therefore, owning a handgun safe is critically important, even if you don't live in an area with a lot of crime. All it takes is one break in to put your home and the community in danger.
Remember, gun safes are not only designed to protect your gun but also any other high priced items you own that you want to keep secure. If you have expensive jewelry, for example, this is an excellent place to stash it.
The safe also keeps the gun in top condition, because it prevents it from getting dings and dents it might incur if left out in the open. In addition, you can use handgun safes to keep other valuable possessions along with your gun or guns, another very important benefit.
A larger one has to be put on a hard surface and installed there to keep it in place, and you need to make sure the fixed bolt is not able to be taken off with under 2kn of force. This will prevent any burglars from walking out with it.
Even if you have a combination the burglar won't be able to open without a lot of tries, they often times will take it any way to try and open it later, making it imperative to attach it to the floor or wall. If you have a smaller safe, this probably won't be necessary, as you can simply hide it in an area where the thief would never look.
No matter what, though, you want to be sure it's in a place you can get to quickly if need be. Every second counts if your home is being robbed, so this is critical.
The best handgun safes are usually the thickest steel available, as these will prevent anybody from hacking their way through.
Also, the most secure will have a fingerprint sensor that will only open when you put your finger in front of it. Since certainly nobody else has your exact finger match, you don't have to worry about a break in.
However, if you aren't able to afford this (finger sensors are pricey) then at least get a lock that has a lot of different possible combinations, as this will make it hard for the criminal to guess.
Also don't forget to check how fireproof the handgun safe is. You definitely don't want your valuables damaged or destroyed in a blaze, and every gun safe is different as to how much heat they can handle and for how long, so look into this as well.
