[S264]Self Defense How To
by Steve Lane, Ste
The term self defense has a million different implications for every person who hears it. Some people simply think of a weapon while others believe it involves years of training and preparation just to ensure personal safety. Many consumers also believe this term is synonymous with bringing actual firearms and ammunition into the household.

Personal defense has a significant interest in todays world. It does not seem to matter where you live in the world, there is crime occurring. The best protective measures are preventative measures. They stop any activity before it starts.

There are general rules-of-thumb for protecting yourself. The standard principals are simple and may be applied regardless of where you live. Always lock your doors, in both your home and your vehicle, and only park your automobile in well-lit areas. If an unmarked car approaches with a light flashing as a police vehicle would, do not stop until you do so in a public area around other people.

If you believe someone is deliberately following your vehicle, simply pull into the parking lot of a fire station or police station. It is also recommended that you lock you doors at this point and beep your horn until someone comes outside. If someone is following you with dubious intentions, they will drive away.

These measures are reliable for their situations, however, there are times when even the most cautious and careful individual can become victimized by another person. This is the primary reason so many consumers have opted for non-lethal methods of protection.

Many misconceptions have greatly affected the consumers perspective of personal defense. Do you need a black belt in martial arts in order to properly defend your family or your home? A license to carry a weapon? Does it involve hours of training or practice just to know you are prepared?

Fortunately, with the help of modern technology, defending yourself or your home is far easier than it has ever been. There are several non-lethal measures to take that are effective against an attacker or burglar. These simple, precautionary measures are both safe and effective for the consumer households when used and handled responsibly.

The most common non-lethal practices for protecting yourself or your family are: tasers, stun guns and pepper sprays. These can be easily purchased and are easy to learn how to use.

There are a few standard principals every consumer should know when choosing to utilize any of these methods. Read and retain all documentation when you receive your product. Note any warning messages and store your product out-of-the-reach of children.

For the most effective experience, store your product in a place that is easily accessible. Keep it in a nightstand beside your bed or under the seat in your car.

These products are also convenient due to their portability. Most can be inconspicuously carried in your purse or pocket and many are designed to appear completely benign to someone else. Many of these products are disguised and appear as unthreatening as cell phones.

There are many technical differences between these items. The Internet offers a great deal of information for researching which item will be best for you. There is never a reason to fear when you use all the resources available.

Safety measures change to Safety measures Crime and Protecting Yourself It has been a long day and you are coming home in the dark when a noise makes you realize that you have might come into a situation that requires self defense and that you have no stun gun, taser, pepper spray, mace, or personal alarm to assist in your self defense should the need arise. Your mind begins to race as you contemplate your responses to a would-be attacker. Perhaps you could try to fight like those actors in the movies: a well-placed thumb to the eye or slashing with your keys or even trying the basic karate moves might work as self defense. What many people in this position do not realize is that would-be attackers are criminal in nature ? a mugger wants the wallet not to hurt the owner unless resistance makes it impossible. Such individuals have seen the same movies, attended the same self defense classes, and are prepared for just such a fight. The key to successful self defense becomes a question of avoiding the fight.

Self defense is a legally defined act and refers to how we go about protecting our physical self and/or belongings. The law makes takes into account that a reasonable amount of force is to be expected in such situations as is the use of a weapon. Some common self defense weapons include stun guns, pepper spray, tasers and mace as well as personal alarms. However, when acts of self defense come under the review of the legal system, they can actually be viewed as unnecessary, excessive in nature or as fighting. Fighting is an illegal and often physically violent act that most often occurs as we protect our emotional self in such situations. Once again the key to successful self defense is in avoiding the fight and deterring the would-be attacker.

Stun guns, pepper spray, tasers, and mace are common items carried for self defense. However, there are laws about when stun guns, pepper spray, tasers, mace and similar weapons may be used. It all comes back to the specific circumstances and how the stun gun, pepper spray, taser, mace, etc. was used. Even though you may have considered it self defense when you used your stun gun, pepper spray, taser, mace, the law may not see it as such and you can be fined or even jailed for fighting.

Personal alarms may provide the best option to avoid legal issues while trying to ensure adequate self defense. These items simply emit high-pitched frequencies that attempt to deter would-be attackers by attracting the attention of possible witnesses and assistance. You can obtain personal alarms in a variety of manners. Car alarms, home security systems, and other such alarms can assist in self defense of personal property as well as physical being. Due to their non-violent nature, self defense alarms are often not included as a self defense weapon but they can be just as effective in deterring would-be attackers.

When choosing a method of self defense you should consider all of the options as well as take a look into the laws regarding self defense weapons. Know your legal obligations and rights concerning self defense before investing in stun guns, pepper spray, tasers, mace and alarms.
