Working as the only accountant at a wholesale foods distribution company, my job is seen as something of a mystery to even the people responsible for hiring me, much less my co-workers. Though accounting as a field is relatively cut and dry, the manipulation of data to produce reports, forecast profits and manage assets is a complicated endeavor. I'm now able to handle these tasks with ease, though there was a time when the ability to do so was just as much a mystery for me.

My education, internships and previous employment prepared me well for any accounting related problems or unique situations that occur in the process of working for a wholesale distributor. What my education and experience didn't prepare me for was how to use the complicated business accounting software that was purchased by the company.

My first thought, after trying to navigate through the multiple menus and ascertain exactly how this was supposed to be helpful to me in the process of performing my duties, was that this is exactly what happens when someone in purchasing who knows nothing about accounting takes it upon themselves to make decisions. After reading up on the capabilities of the software, I felt a little better, though I still had no idea of how to manipulate it to do what I needed it to do. After a lot of frustrating trial and error, I decided a little outside help was in order.

I convinced my employer to send me to a three day intensive workshop offered by a company who specializes in providing training and support services for the software in question. They understood my frustration and readily agreed, though neither of us knew what to expect or if three days of training would give me the answers I needed. Fortunately, the training was exactly what the doctor ordered, as within the first day I already felt as though I had a much better handle on what I was doing and how to get things accomplished. It worked out so well, in fact, that my employer also agreed to a support services package for another software used in the distribution department.

Proper training, in my opinion, makes all the difference. Because the abilities inherent with most business software applications are so all encompassing, it's impossible to think anyone without prior knowledge can just step in and make it work to their advantage. It certainly did a world of wonders for me.
