While Larimar is mined in many colors, from white-blue to the dazzling shade known as volcanic blue, the deeper colors are the hallmark of extreme high quality Larimar. The most prized Larimar is a deep, vibrant blue, called volcanic blue and is incredibly difficult to obtain. Like all gemstones, from diamonds to sapphires and opals, Larimar is graded on several inherent qualities within the stone itself. Only a fraction of the Larimar mined is of sufficient quality to earn the highest grade, AAA.

As with all fine gemstones, Larimar is graded on these qualities, which indicate the quality, brilliance and other attributes of the gem:

Color- AAA grade Larimar possesses a striking, intense deep blue color. While other colors of Larimar are available, the deep volcanic blue is the most prized due to the rarity of the color.

Pattern- Fine Larimar has a distinctive pattern, deep in the heart of the gem. AAA graded Larimar has exquisite patterning, reminiscent of the deep waters surrounding the Dominican Republic where it is mined.

Luster- As with all other fine gems, Larimar is also graded on its luster. This is a measurement of the gem's sheen and reflectivity. A dull gem will not receive an AAA grade.

Luminosity- AAA grade Larimar has an intrinsic glow, a vibrancy unmatched by other gems.

Clarity- Like diamonds, Larimar is graded on its clarity. The highest grade Larimar will have clear depth with intense, brilliant colors.

Translucence- Light passes through Larimar, making the gem glow with an inner light and providing unsurpassed beauty.

Chatoyance- This is a silky, lustrous band that coils within the heart of the gem.

Each of these factors dictates the gem's overall grade. As with the finest diamonds, only three percent of the Larimar mined will possess all of these attributes and become AAA graded. Many Larimar dealers simply don't have access to gems of this quality, marketing lesser quality stones in their place.
