[S94]Satellite Broadband Internet Service
by Suruchi, Sur
One of the biggest bottlenecks faced by companies which are trying to expand their reach and operational base in India is the lack of penetration of high speed Internet connection in remote areas, due to inadequate reach of telecommunication infrastructure and services in these areas. As companies are relying more and more on the Internet to connect them to their far flung units and franchisee outfits, and to conduct business in general, the inaccessibility of these areas has been posing a serious obstacle.

Not anymore though. The satellite Internet broadband connection is revolutionising the way Internet can be taken to areas where there are terrestrial Internet connectivity available. In this service, fast and reliable Internet broadband connection is available anywhere through satellites.

How does it work?

Satellite broadband Internet connection utilizes a dish connected to decoding equipment to connect to Internet backbone of the satellite internet provider through a network of satellites. The received data is decoded and displayed by the necessary equipment. To send data, another set of equipment is used to encode the data and transmit it to the satellites through a dish. This makes Internet connection available anywhere in the satellite's footprint.

Types of services

Since subscribing for satellite Internet service is costly, customers can opt for any of the following subscription options provided by satellite broadband internet service providers depending upon their use and requirement.

One-way multicast service
With this kind of subscription you can enjoy very high speed downloads through satellite, but you cannot upload data. For that you will have to go for some land based ISP.

One-way with a terrestrial return
With this type you can both upload and download, but while download will be available through satellite at great speeds, uploads will be through some terrestrial ISP.

Two-way satellite internet service
In this type of service both upload and download are available through satellite. For this type you need to have both uplink modem and a downlink modem installed. This option gives you the highest speed and just one service provider to deal with.

Advantages of satellite Internet

Anywhere Internet ? Internet connectivity at good speed whether on land or on water in far flung remote areas, provided you are within the satellite's footprint.

Always on connection ? no broken connections and more than 90% uptime

Mobility ? with portable tripod mounted dish, you can roam anywhere while enjoying full fledged Internet connectivity.

Satellite Internet systems has allowed people in remote areas to enjoy reliable and fast Internet connectivity. With the advent of satellite internet broadband, the non-availability of DSL or dial up Internet connections are no longer posing barriers to small and medium businesses operating from remote areas. However such systems don't work for online gaming or audio-video downloads (because of long latency period) and are good primarily for Web browsing and for downloading of data files.

Many of our rural areas do not have immediate access to the Internet through their local cable provider. These providers work on Supply and Demand. If there is not a high demand for high speed in your neighborhood, they will not install the DSL or Cable landlines in your area for you to access the Internet.

Perhaps your local provider is being bought out by another provider that does not support DSL or Cable. What they may offer is a later date connection on their own Scheduled for future installs, they work on their own contracted dates, even if there is a high demand. Meaning you could be waiting over a year for high-speed access.

There is a solution to the problem. It's called Satellite Internet Access. How this works is very much like Satellite television. With Satellite Internet service, you are receiving a direct feed from your Providers Satellite directly into your own home.

Your home is installed with the proper satellite equipment and a receiver that feeds directly to a Satellite in space. This gives you direct access to the Internet through a satellite signal, the signal than transmits back to your receiver. The signals are transmitted much like a cell phone and any other mobile devices.

There are two types of transmitters, the One-way and the Two Way. We highly suggest installing a 2-way Satellite Internet service. What that means is, unlike the one way, which feeds the outgoing signal through a telephone landline and then to your providers Server, then to the Satellite, back to your home PC.

The 2-way Satellite directly transmits the signal to the Satellite and directly back to your home. With the properly installed equipment, it is as simple as click and go. This device will provide you with the most direct and fastest way to obtain access to the Internet.

The 2-way satellite system is an upgrade compared to the 1-way in costs; however, you are receiving a direct signal, which is well worth the speed and resolution. The Satellite will need to face in the direction of the South East. You may experience some interference with your satellite signal depending on weather. However, more often than not, you should be online 24/7.

2-way satellite Internet service provides you the high-speed broadband Internet access solution that you have been waiting for.
