Work uniforms do not exist solely for the purpose of fostering a feeling of solidarity, they can also be functional. Uniforms for certain professions offer protection as well. We will look at some of the professions that have both a symbolic and functional or protective purpose for wearing uniforms. Here, we consider the professions of a chemist or someone who works in a chemistry lab, a firefighter and a football player.
People who work in laboratories often handle chemicals. Some of these chemicals can be dangerous and can cause a lot of harm if they come into contact with skin. Additionally, doctors also wear lab coats to minimize the risk of being exposed to any infectious material. Lastly, lab coats can be used to protect against fire. Some lab coats are made of a flame retardant material, but the main advantage that a lab coat wearer has is the fact that the coat itself can quickly be removed and isolated from the rest of the body.
All the professionals who work in this environment will wear lab coats, both to provide them with the protection that they need and also to make the distinction that they are members of staff of that particular organization. Some lab coats may have branding or insignias of the specific organization that they work for, but in cases like this, the symbolic or branding aspect of the lab coat is only secondary.
Another set of professionals that deal with fire and are also required to wear work uniforms are fire fighters. Fighting fire is a very dangerous profession and requires individuals who are courageous and giving. While courage and bravery play an important role, these individuals aren't superhuman. They cannot withstand high temperatures without some sort of protective clothing.
This is where the fire fighters' work uniforms play a significant part. The uniforms not only have the fire department branding and the name of the fire fighter, but it also has the capability of protecting the fire fighter during his most dangerous part of working running into burning buildings to save civilians. We were all able to instantly recognize the heroic New York City fire fighters during the September 11th attacks by the distinctive "FDNY" branding on their uniforms.
Individuals engaged in sports will also wear uniforms and some of them also offer protective features. Football and Ice Hockey players not only have team colors, but also have a lot of protective gear that goes on as part of their uniform. It is easy to pick out the distinctive uniform of an American Football player because of its unique design. The same can be said for the Ice Hockey uniforms as well.
The marrying of the symbolic and functional nature of uniforms is not new; it has been around for a long time and is a clever way of both projecting a team or organizations solidarity without having to sacrifice the protective aspects as well.
In my thirty-some-odd-years as a dental professional, I have been teaching and empowering people to take control of their own mouths. Too often, we rely on the dental or medical professional to fix us once we are sick instead of taking responsibility for our own bodies and preventing illness before it starts. Research from all over the world on gum diseases (infections caused by mouth bacteria and other microorganisms) suggests links between chronic infections in the mouth and heart disease, stroke, diabetic complications, respiratory problems, pancreatic cancer, premature childbirth and low birth weight babies.
Most people are unaware that cavities and sore, swollen, bleeding gums, (gingivitis, and its more advanced cousin, periodontitis) are caused by specific bacteria and other microorganisms that live and breed between the teeth and gums, in the irregular surface of the tongue, behind molars, in tonsils, and in just about any of the nooks and crannies of the mouth. In fact, there are over 700 varieties of germs in the oral cavity, some good, some bad, but most, if not removed properly, can threaten your whole-body health.
Imagine yourself with a beautiful smile, all your natural teeth, and “kissable" breath even into your later years! By adding one simple self-care step each day you can have all that! Dental irrigation is a wonderful way to reduce the numbers of microbes around teeth and gums, allowing them to stay healthy and beautiful. It is an excellent way to kill the mouth germs that can make you sick by removing the risk factors that threaten health. If you haven’t heard of irrigation, or haven’t yet tried this marvelous invention, I would seriously consider it.
Irrigation – A tool for the health conscious!
Very simply, dental irrigation uses a device, often electrical, to force a pulsating jet of warm water in a slim stream into the spaces in between the teeth and gums. While the manual toothbrush cleans to a depth of only around 1/8 inch below the gums, the irrigator, when combined with special tips, not only disrupts the surface bacteria but also their toxic byproducts even deeper below the gum line. This process kills the subgingival bacteria and flushes them out from spaces other tools can’t reach.
There are many rewards in blasting the plaque off your teeth and gums and now it couldn’t be easier to irrigate. There is a new product on the market that combines ease with practicality – allowing you to clean your body and your mouth all in one go. This unique tool hooks up to the shower nozzle allowing you to drench your body and your mouth at the same time. No muss, no fuss, and no special preparation. http://www.mamagums.com/products.html#plaqueblaster
The dental irrigator is a simple-to-use tool that significantly aids in:
•Diminishing bacteria and their toxic by-products by diluting, dispersing, and flushing them out of your mouth. •Reducing inflammation and bleeding. •Massaging and toughening up the gum tissue. •Cleaning around orthodontic bands, brackets, and wires (braces), as well as crowns, bridgework, and implants. •Reducing bad breath. • Helping firm up your gums, enabling them to hug your teeth more tightly.
Irrigation is far easier to use than dental floss, doesn’t turn your fingers blue, and best of all, is easy and fun for kids to use as well. This life-saving lavage not only feels great, but its daily use can just possibly help you retain your natural teeth for a lifetime, avoid gum surgery, and maybe even add years to your life.
William Mayo of the esteemed Mayo Clinic once said, “Daily plaque control can add ten years to your life." So why not take a few minutes each day to freshen up your mouth with an invigorating and beneficial shower?
