In the last few years, there have been many vehicle tracking devices introduced into the market. The GPS tracking system quickly became one of the most popular because of its ability to accurately define a locations coordinates, and then project a travel path to avoid a person getting lost and to save mileage and travel time. Some of these GPS systems are also capable of recording a vehicles travel patterns and speed limit patterns, giving insurance companies a way of providing incentive discounts to teenagers.

Brazil now has a new law that will really impact the industry that controls vehicle tracking solutions. It will also help to boost the client base of those companies by almost 75% in the next five years, this is an increase of almost 500,000 new customers.

What is the New Law?

Auto theft is also a big problem in Brazil, more so even than in larger, more technologically advanced countries like the United Kingdom and the United States. Every day, fifteen percent of all of the countries vehicles are stolen, with less than half of those being recovered. A new law has been passed in Brazil to try to reduce the number of auto thefts in the country and help the authorities to locate stolen vehicles. Beginning in August, all vehicles receiving a new registration are required to have a vehicle tracking system installed in them. Prior to the implementation of this law, only 10% of the vehicles in Brazil (number more than 52 million) were equipped with tracking systems.

What System Will Be Used?

Ituran is the manufacturer of the tracking system that the government is requiring new car owners to possess. This wireless tracking system will make use of a satellite vehicle tracking system combined with land-based receivers. A red alert signal will be sent from a sensor installed in the car to a call center if the vehicle has been tampered with or stolen. The satellite receiver in the vehicle will then be used to track the location of the car for recovery. Once the call center has located the vehicle, the information is turned over to the police so that an arrest can be made. Another benefit is that Ituran's tracking system allows the call center to remotely turn off the vehicle's engine and disable it.

Compared to systems offered by other companies, the cost of this one is fairly cheap. Ituran will either sell or rent the equipment to the owners of a vehicle, even if they are uninsured. Each tracking system will cost about $400 to $500 dollars, plus the $15 per month charge for monitoring and tracking services.

Based in Israel and established in 1998, Ituran's second largest customer base is in Brazil. When designing the vehicle tracking systems that they are currently marketing, Ituran patterned their technology after the systems used by the Israeli Air Force to locate planes and soldiers who had been shot down in enemy territory.

Ituran expects to spend in excess of $60 million in case for the new Brazil project. They also hope to expand to other countries with high crime rates, like Poland, South Africa, Mexico, and Russia.
