Campers know all to well the dangers of a bear encounter. People who live in Alaska are more likely to see a bear in their backyard than someone in Pennsylvania. As the population continues to grow throughout the country, more and more bear encounters are happening. You read and hear about them on a regular basis.
Most folks think of bears as huge lumbering oafs. Some think of them as cute. Bears are very quick and powerful. They have devastating claws that can kill with one swipe.
Bears have a very keen sense of smell. They are usually looking for some easy food source. Once a bear has tasted food from a human source it is more likely he will continue to seek another human source-maybe your backyard or home.
So that is tip number one. Keep food waste well covered and protected. Place garbage in a bag in a container located in a secure area-a shed, a garage-a place that is hard to get at.
Secondly, bears are not normally aggressive. They can be very curious. They are normally afraid of confrontation unless threatened or protecting their cubs. The sound of barking dogs is enough to scare them away.
Lastly, always have some bear spray around. There are pepper sprays specifically made for self defense against bears. Get some and practice using it so when the need arises it is second nature for you. It may save you from a bear encounter of the closest kind.
Follow these tips and you will be miles ahead of your neighbors in protecting your home
and family from the threat of a bear attack.
