[R210]Rent To Own Furniture
by Cathy Peterson, Cat

If you are unsure whether to rent your furniture for your new apartment or house or to buy, there are advantages and disadvantages for both options. First, purchasing furniture for your house right of the bat will ultimately save you a lot of cash in the long run. It may seem overwhelming at first when you receive the bill but it is worth it…it's yours. When you rent furniture from a rental outlet, you do not have to worry about paying the full amount for your furniture all at once.

This may seem as if you are saving a lot of money but are you really? Many furniture rental companies count on new homeowners and apartment renters to rent instead of buying. Rental companies have a set value for furniture and then they add on fees usually weekly or monthly fees on top of the original price. So, if you want to rent a 4 piece dining room set for $800, the rental company will add on interest and tax so instead of paying $800, you could be paying close to $1200 dollars. You will be paying more than what the furniture is actually worth.

The advantage renting furniture is if anything is damaged due to no fault of your own, they will replace it with the exact replica or something different. If you purchase furniture on clearance at a furniture wholesale warehouse and the furniture breaks you are responsible to get it repaired or to purchase a whole new set.

Renting furniture can be a hassle, especially if you decide that you are tired of a particular piece. For example: if you rent a china closet and you purchase a new dinner table and you decide that you want to rent something totally different, your request maybe denied due to your contract or based on availability.

Many furniture rental places have a rent to own option. The catch is, suppose 2 to 3 years down the line you do not want that particular piece anymore, you are basically stuck with it unless you put it up for sale on your own. The best thing to do when deciding to rent or to purchase is to weigh your options. Select the option with the most advantages.
