There are two categories of taps used in bathrooms and kitchens -- monobloc taps and multibloc taps. While the monobloc taps have a single outlet for flow of water, multibloc taps have two outlets for flow of water. In monobloc taps, there are two segments -- taps that allow flow of one kind of water, either hot or cold and taps that allow flow of hot water and cold water through the same outlet.
Multibloc taps have separate outlets for flow of hot water and cold water. Sometimes, the supply pipe to the tap is common or have dedicated pipes for supply for hot water and cold water separately.
It is not an easy task to dismantle these taps and replace them with new taps. A wrench spanner is a must while plumbing. Without a wrench spanner, efforts in replacing a tap will go waste. For, wrench spanners provide the best helping hand in plumbing.
Before replacing the tap, ensure that the water supply to the tap is cut off. This can be done by closing the main valve that controls supply of water to the taps. Then, drain water completely from the tap. Using the wrench spanner, turn the tap holder that connects the supply pipe. If the tap holder is corroded and does not budge, use oil or lubricant. The lubricant should enter the tap holder drop by drop. After waiting for a few minutes for the lubricant to enter the tap holder, start applying pressure on the tap holder. This exercise should loosen the tap holder.
Even after using the lubricant, if the tap holder does not give way, then follow this procedure. Let the lubricant drop by drop into the tap holder for every fifteen minutes and try to loosen it.
Once the tap holder is loose, ensure that the corroded material inside the supply pipe is drained. To do this, restore supply of water by turning the main valve slowly. Opening the main valve suddenly might result in gushing of water. After the pipe is completely drained off the corroded material, commence the process of fixing the new tap. Ensure that there is adequate threading on the tap holder. Slowly screw the tap holder into the supply pipe. This should be a slow process. Once the tap holder firmly fixes itself in the supply pipe, use the wrench spanner to adjust the angle of the tap by turning the tap holder.
