Whisking your partner away on a surprise, two week long exotic vacation may seem like an extremely romantic idea for a Valentines Day gift but it does not always work out that way. In theory a surprise vacation is incredibly romantic but in reality it can often be filled with complications which put a damper on the trip. However, it is possible to plan a trip for Valentines Day and have it turn out to be an absolutely incredible gift which your partner will remember forever.

Here's a few tips on how to plan a trip for Valentine's Day without running into a number of snags.

A trip away on Valentine's Day can be a great gift idea for both you and your partner but it will be most effective if you pay careful attention to the timing of the trip. This is important because work and family obligations can make it extremely difficult for one person to plan even a short getaway without at least some input from their partner. This is especially important if you are planning a trip which is longer than a weekend.

Longer Travel Vacations

This longer trip will require you and your partner to take time off of work or to make arrangements for someone to take care of their place of residence. However, work is not the only potential complication. Family obligations can also have an impact on the planning. For example if your partner routinely picks up her niece from school and watches her for a couple of hours, she may need to find a replacement for this family obligation.

These types of scheduling conflicts can be avoided by simply making your partner aware of the plans and soliciting feedback on the proposed dates of the trip to make the planning easier. You don't have to give away the whole surprise by telling your partner where you will be going but letting her know the dates of travel will help to avoid problems which could result if you do not consult her beforehand.

Traveling on the day Itself

Another thing to consider when planning a trip for Valentine's Day is whether or not you want to actually be traveling on Valentine's Day. This becomes especially important if you are planning a trip to a faraway destination. If this is the case you might want to plan on either leaving after Valentine's Day or before Valentine's Day so you can spend the holiday relaxing together instead of traveling. Travel can be very stressful and tiring so if you want to avoid problems which may result from this, it is a good idea to plan your trip so you will not be traveling on Valentine's Day.

Travel to Locations That Suit You Both

Finally, when planning a trip for Valentine's Day it is very important to make sure you select a location which both you and your partner will really appreciate. There may be a number of activities you enjoy as well as a number of activities your partner enjoys but these activities will not necessarily overlap. However, there are likely to be some activities which you have in common.

It is important to make sure your vacation destination is one which will have plenty of activities for the two of you to enjoy together. For example you may be really looking forward to a golfing vacation but if your partner does not play golf it will result in the two of you spending a great deal of time apart during your vacation. By selecting a vacation where there are activities for the two of you to enjoy together you will be spending quality time together on your Valentine's Day vacation. That's the important part of the trip, being together.

Make sure to have everything organized at home, so there are no wild phone calls needing your immediate attention and you'll both be able to enjoy a very special weekend with your Valentine.

In their 15 years together he had never managed to get her with chocolate she loved ON Valentine's Day. It's usually showed up with a few days after Valentine's Day, but she really wanted it as a Valentine's Day gift.

She had been hinting for weeks. "I love chocolate on Valentine's Day." She had found so many opportunities to remind him that when Valentine's Day was coming, that he couldn't get it wrong again this year.

Valentine's day came and for the 15th year a row nothing happened. Allison was devastated. However on the day after Valentine's Day Steve presented her with a huge box of Valentine's candy.

At her next coaching session Allison recounted the sad tale. "Why can't he get it right? He does know I like candy and he does get it for me. Why can't he get it for me on Valentine's Day?"

After speculating together for a few minutes Allison decided that Steve's heart really was in the right place but something was wrong with their communication. She decided that hinting was not working and she needed a new strategy. One evening after dinner she asked if she could talk with him. She explained how disappointed she was that she did not get her chocolates on Valentine's Day.

He was amazed. He explained that he knew she loved chocolate and that the day after Valentine's Day all the chocolate was marked down to half price. He could buy her twice as much for the same amount of money if the only waited 24 hours. He had no idea that receiving a gift on Valentine's Day was what Allison really wanted most.

She explained that for the 17 years they had known each other, she had been waiting for him to make her Valentine's Day romantic by giving her a gift on that day. She had told stories about how romantic it would be to get a Valentine's Day gift. She had been dropping hints about gift she wanted to receive and she had been giving him cards, but nothing had happened.

He looked blank. "I never knew you wanted anything until you started telling me about chocolate. As soon as I realized what you wanted I got it for you." By this time she was in tears. "I can't believe our communication is so messed up."

Steve told her, "I can't read your mind, just tell me what you want and I'll be glad to do it for you. I just want to be happy. I never knew what I was doing wrong. I guess I just can't hear hints." Allison pleaded, "Next year will you give me chocolate on Valentine's Day? And I mean ON Valentine's Day!" Steve methodically made a note in this calendar Allison did not ask what it was.

The next year, ON Valentine's Day, Allison received a large box of chocolates, a romantic card and a dozen roses. She was ecstatic.

The moral this story is that mind reading is an inexact art. Next time mind reading is not working for you, try having a conversation in which you state clearly what you want, and be sure that your partner understands you. You may be pleasantly surprised at the result.
