Have you ever noticed how much harder it is to put on your eyeliner and mascara when the weather turns colder? When it gets colder, your mascara can be a little stiffer coming out of the tube making a smooth application next to impossible. Maybe your eyeliner seems to be almost frozen solid. It doesn't take much to make your eyeliner harder which makes putting it on really difficult. Colder weather can pose a few problems for eye makeup application, but I have a few makeup tips that I've learned and I hope will you apply your eye makeup a little easier this winter. It is so annoying when eyeliner seems to be too hard and cold to apply properly. The good news is that each of us holds the key to fixing the problem. It is our bodies. Your body heat is the perfect temperature to warm up that chilled eye makeup. Simply put your eyeliner right on your stomach or hip allowing your clothes to hold it tight. It doesn't take very long to warm it up and it will be ready for application. A simple thing I do is allow my eyeliner to warm up while I am doing my hair. This same tip is great for your mascara. When it's too cold, mascara is often more difficult to deal with than eyeliner. When it's cold, your lashes end up looking clumped together and stiff. Using your body heat works great to avoid letting your mascara ruin your makeup look. I've found that it takes a little bit longer to warm up than the eyeliner, so you'll want to give it a few extra minutes. You'll find that the time is worth it when your mascara then goes on smoothly. Curling your eyelashes is also an important step in many womens' eye makeup routines. In the winter, your eyelash curler is often ice cold. I would recommend warming it up as well during the colder months. Just like your hair curling iron, your eyelash curler will work much better when it's slightly heated. I sometimes use my body heat to warm my eyelash curler. Sometimes I find myself in a rush. In these cases, I simply run my blow dryer over it for a few seconds to warm it up. If you use your blow dryer, be cautious not to heat it up too much. Your eye area is sensitive, so test the temperature of the curler with your finger. With these cold weather tips, you can still look great and create beautiful winter makeup looks.
It is a common fact that excessive sun exposure can be damaging to your skin. However, cold weather can take its toll on your skin, too, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin. The lower temperatures outside, increased windiness and the fact you are turning up the thermostat in your home can all make your skin chapped, flaky, blotchy, dry and itchy.
During the summer, we are more prone to take care of our skin because of the constant need for topical relief measures such as sunscreen and insect repellent. However, the winter is the season when our skin actually needs the most extra care. To help your skin to survive the brutality of the season, keep in mind the following simple winter skin care tips:
1. Continue to use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or better. Although you may not feel it as much, the sun can be just as powerful when reflecting off the snow or while taking a long walk outdoors as it is on a summer day at the beach. A convenient suggestion is to use a moisturizer or foundation with a built-in sunscreen everyday.
2. Use a mild cleanser as opposed to soap, which can strip your skin of the essential oils it needs.
3. Though you may not be as thirsty as during the summer, continue to drink lots of water to provide the necessary hydration to your skin.
4. Avoid products with high alcohol content, heavy perfumes or other additives that can irritate your sensitive, dry skin.
5. During the cold weather, you might want to try using a thicker, richer moisturizer, two to three times per day, to help your skin to adequately replenish the moisture it loses.
6. Gently exfoliate your skin to remove the dead surface skin cells than can form due to excessive dryness.
7. Remember your lips are also part of the skin on your face so use a soothing lip balm or moisturizing lipstick, preferably with a sunscreen.
8. Try to keep an anti-itch cream on hand to apply to excessively dry patches that occur despite taking the above suggestions, so that you can moisturize these tender areas to avoid scratching and prevent infection.
By taking a few common sense winter skin care precautions, you can be as happy and beautiful in the winter as you are during the summer.
