[C799]College Credit Card Debt Statistics
by David Smythe, Dav
A credit card has the same influence over everybody, it does not matter who owns it because anybody can be influenced by the power this little piece of plastic has, power that has pulled to the ground millions of people due to huge debts. Statistics have been conducted on teen credit card holders and they show the same figures as the statistics on the adult card owners.

Teen credit card debt statistics indicate that many teenagers from the United States have had on their credit card a great amount of balance. Teens are supposed to have limited needs for credit so it is not right for this phenomenon to be happening.

Usually, the credit cards offered to them are extensions of their parents' credit cards. Still, that does not stop them from overspending. It can be explained by the fact that the teenagers do not yet fully understand the concept of having a credit card in their hands, and they do not realize the danger and the situation, which can emerge in case the credit card is overused. The studies made must really be a warning sign for the adults.

They must be more concerned with educating the young in the matter. They will not stop spending until they realize that having a powerful piece of plastic in their pocket does not mean they can do whatever they want with it. Teens must be warned and given examples of what overspending with the credit card has done to millions of people all over the world. Education is the key to the change of the statistics.

They must be taught how to resist the temptation of impulsive shopping and they also must be taught how to asses their financial situation so that they can realize the limit they must stop at when spending. What adults must do is explain them with details what is the process of spending money through the credit card, and after that the statistics must change. They need to know that once they have taken the credit card to the counter, there will be a bill issued. That bill has to be paid in time, if not, it can generate interest rates, which applied to the account, can reach amounts hard to be paid back.

In order to be trained and educated about handling their finances, teens must be asked to maintain control of their pocket money and record every penny they spend.

Opening a bank account for teens can also be a solution, and by the time they receive their personal debit card, they will have known exactly what do with it, and will not mess it up.

They can get a credit card limited and insured by their parents. They must be educated so that they do not fall into the trap of credit card debts. Such training will be useful before they enter the real world and become independent, and will also contribute to the decrease of the debt statistics.

Going to college is a fantastic 4-years experience that one will remember for the rest of his life. During this period, most students will apply and get at least one credit card for himself. With this credit card, he can spend on things he wouldn't have been able to had he not had the credit card. In the past, he is limited to the amount of cash he can carry in his wallet. Now, all he needs is swipe that ever powerful credit card to get what he wants.

Usually what happens is that as time passes and a college student gets older, his debt gets bigger as well. Nevertheless, this condition is not totally hopeless. He can still turn things around if the situation can be controlled again.

For a lot of people, college credit card debt starts with that very first credit card. Nevertheless, by simply educating students about college credit card debt and helping them in planning for their financial future, one can help prevent college credit card debt from ruining the life of a young college student.

Most credit card companies' first tactic is to offer college students credit cards that have a very low introductory interest rate. Luckily, since most college student credit cards' limits are relatively still small, it is most likely that their college credit card debts are still lower than that of working adults.

To curb the problem of college credit card debt is not easy. Nevertheless, we must try our best to help these students get out of credit card debt. They have to know that using their credit cards today would mean they have to pay for it later. They must be responsible for their actions. These are the principles that we must teach them.

In order to deter college students from engaging in credit card debts, we can tell them real stories where people have taken their own lives because they were unable to pay off their debts. We can instill this fear in them so that they will think twice the next time they want to use their credit cards.

Today, about 80% of college students own least one credit card and approximately 20% of college students have credit card debts as high as US$7000. Can you imagine a college student with no income with debts as high as this?

One big drawback for college students involved in credit card debts is that when they graduate to find jobs, their employers typically will do some credit history checks on them just to make sure they are not heavily in debts.

In today's society, people as young as 18 years of age have credit cards. They must be educated properly so that they can escape the credit card debt trap. If not, their bright future will be destroyed.
