[C388]Chang Mai Thailand Hotels
by Hedin Johan, Hed
A City of Angels
Even before I touched down on the Bangkok tarmac in the smooth as silk Thai international flight from Rome, I somehow knew what lay ahead of me- I could half imagine the Siamese as they were once so elegantly known. And now simply Thais; the meaning of freedom, freedom because this country was never colonized. Freedom, because they still hold on to their values, their history, their wonderful artistic language and script and freedom because that they against all odds have managed to keep out those western influences that have so far destroyed a lot of other Asian cultures. Name one country that hasn't been changed by the west, or indeed the Far East that has already been deformed by us.
Princess Princess
The taxi took me along rows of majestic tree-lined boulevards to a hotel situated at the very heart of Bangkok's historic and spiritual beauty. We passed numerous houses of god- as in Buddhist temples whose monks and what appeared to be child-like novice monks seemed to guard the entrances as though these places of worship were castles of god. The oriental city in its full splendour has beckoned me to visit this Princess so charming that even the silver lined clouds of that Bangkok day seemed to be saying a very dear welcome home. I rest my head on the pillow of my Princess hotel room and feel my heart beating in what seems to be the rhythmic chime of distant temple bells. With this rhythm I can sleep and dream of another time, another century when Bangkok-the City of Angels was not the capital. I whisper [Ayutthaya]. I am awoken by birds, song and the whispering trees that sway to allow an intermittent stream of sunshine to pour through the hotel blinds and onto my face. The warmth of this is more than the warmth of a bosom or a child-but more a distinct warmth of great hotel hospitality and good nature. After an early morning breakfast treat at this hotel consisting of a traditional Thai breakfast- I decided to walk the nearby streets surrounding my Princess like hotel. I walked for a while back again along those charming Bangkok roads and boulevards, by the palm fringed canals-whilst smelling the sweet aroma of nature combined with Thai savoury food stalls and exotic incense. Walking away from the river took me to century old canals that lead me to my final destination; the ancient temples of the Grand Palace which houses the revered Emerald Buddha. And then a taxi back through the winding streets and on to the Princess once again.
