5 NEW Must-Try Light Grocery Finds
by The Calorista, The
NEW! Banana Nut Cheerios - Calories: 100, Fat: 1g, Sat. Fat: 0g, Carbs: 23g, Fiber: 1g, Protein: 1g

I loved this banana nut Cheerios cereal, and I don't like Cheerios, so that is really saying something! The banana flavor comes from real bananas, which gives it a very nice natural taste. I would say cals/gram (or calorie density) becomes very important with cereals because each cereal varies its serving size so much that it is difficult to make sense of the mess. Cheerios is a big offender of making their serving sizes very small in order to keep the calories at or around 100. If you just read calories, yes, Cheerios is probably the lowest around, but the 28 gram serving size is also quite a bit smaller than the others. Unfortunately this cereal has only 1 gram of fiber and protein, but 9 grams of sugar. However, it is a good source of iron, calcium, whole grains, vitamin D and does NOT cotain High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) like Cheerios other cereals, so that is good news. Overall, I really liked the taste and this a pretty good way to get a lower calorie banana tasting cereal, but there are many more nutritious (non-banana) cereals out there.

NEW! Morningstar Farms BBQ Riblets - Calories: 220, Fat: 3.5g, Sat. Fat: 0g, Sodium 810mg, Carbs: 35g, Fiber: 5g, Protein: 18g

Livin' for these veggie ribs! I am so insanely excited that Morningstar Farms created these, thank you! The only other veggie (or lower calorie) ribs I have found are Gardenburger's ribs (which are delicious) but VERY hard to find and expensive. These are tasty (and are EXACT duplicates of Gardenburger's version so if you've tried those, you'll know exactly what you are getting) and available just about anywhere. Also high in protein, fiber and no cholesterol. Downside: WOWSA. Watch the mountain of salt in these!

NEW! Pop-Tarts Whole Grain Chocolate Fudge Tarts- Calories: 190, Fat: 5g, Sat. Fat: 2g, Sodium: 250mg, Carbs: 34g, Fiber: 5g, Protein: 3g

These are pop-tarts, so I don't think there is any question about how awesome they taste. I think at this point it has become a game of one-up'ing the other guys (AKA, Fiber One). They each have 5g of fiber, but now Pop-Tarts have added 3g of protein and a full serving of whole grains to boot. They also do not have High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) like the Fiber One toaster pastries have. Even though these new Pop-Tarts have a slightly more grainy taste (given the whole grains and all) than Fiber One, I still think I'd rather switch back to good old Pop-Tarts for the extra health benefits! That being said, both brands are almost 200 calories, so eating either shouldn't become a habit.

NEW! Amy's Tamale Verde, Black Bean - Calories: 330, Fat: 10g, Sat. Fat: 1g, Sodium: 780mg, Carbs: 55g, Fiber: 8g, Protein: 7g

Best. Mexican. EVER. OK, I love tamales, so maybe I'm a tinsy bit biased on this, but this was the most delicious frozen mexican entree I've ever had. The rice was also super flavorful, delicious and filling. Unfortunately, it has a lot of fat and is not as great calorically as its new "roasted vegetable" cousin, but it is SOO good. A great source of vitamin C & iron.

NEW! Fiber One Frosted Shredded Wheat Cereal - Calories: 200, Fat: 1g, Sat. Fat: 0g, Sodium: 0g, Carbs: 49g, Fiber: 8g, Protein: 5g

These were tasty - just like Frosted Shredded Wheat (except with more fiber). Post came out with a high fiber variety, but it has no frosting (for the same number of calories)! Of course, the non-frosted variety has less sugar, so if you are looking to cut out sugar, those are the way to go. However, for me, frosting vs. no frosting for the same number of calories...I'm gonna go with the frosting. Also, this is the only Fiber One cereal I have found yet that does not have High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) - so good work on that!
