Ebay Auctions - A Quick Guide
by James Hunaban, Jam

Well, I am sure most people have heard of eBay, and here are a few pointers to using it effectively. But, for anybody who has not heard of eBay, the first thing you need to know is that it is an online auction site which brings buyers and sellers together. Over the last few years it has become the largest and most open market for almost any item you can think of.

One thing you must realize is that there is a slight risk involved with any dealings you have on eBay, as of course, it is only as good as the people who use it. Luckily, eBay have several systems in place in an attempt to safeguard the interests of their users. You really need to read the information and guidelines on their site, before you start buying or selling.

Setting yourself up on eBay is fairly straight forward and registration is free, but for some it can be a bit overwhelming. Not to worry, there is a wealth of information on the internet and lots of books to help you get started on the right track.

When you come to sell on eBay, you have to pay a listing fee to post your sale item and a final value fee, which is a percentage of the final bid price your item achieves. The problem is that if your item does not sell, you still have to pay the listing fee, which is a pain in the wallet.

A very important part of eBay is the feedback system, which you use to build your credibility. The better feedback you have, the easier it is to find willing buyers who can have some trust in you. I suggest you go along to eBay and familiarize yourself with the system. To get some sort of idea of what to expect your item to sell for, have a look at what similar items are selling for, there is also a feature called the completed items search.

One piece of advice is do not be too quick to leave negative feedback for buyers or sellers, as there is a good chance that they will return the favor, whether it is justified or not. As a good example, my eBay account has a feedback score of 120+ and 100% positive. And I have never left negative feedback for anyone, although at times I have been sorely tempted.
