[C382]Chalet Altitude Les Arcs
by Jamie Hanson, Jam
First, the Bourg Saint Maurice ski resort is the place to be for those who love adventure and extreme sports, from white water rafting and canoeing, to paragliding and riding hot air balloons, without forgetting mountain biking, fencing and even kick boxing. The Bourg Saint Maurice is the most animated ski resort in the area.

Mountain biking is growing in popularity and, with parts of the lift network being open all through the months of July and August, it is only expected to grow. There are about 10 marked VTT routes detailed on the summer piste map. Numerous travel agencies and tour operators specialised in mountain biking holidays operate in the area.

Then, the Arc 2000 ski resort is excellent for nature lovers. Hiking and walking trails wind in and around the preferred rendezvous places of the marmot. It is very well connected with the other resorts by shuttle buses or gondolas and chairlifts. It also boasts an extensive offer of restaurants and bars and other meeting places, and even has a cinema screen!

During summer, one will find in the Arc 1600 ski resort an atmosphere calling for relaxation, completely different from the exciting and so animated winter one. As the Is're River is enlarged by melted glacier waters, the Arc 1600 invites you to the most giving spa, providing from first quality massages to professional beauty care. The important historic scenery of the resort puts you in a quiet enchantment state and then, after a calming massage, you will feel happily freshened and ready to be active.

The Arc 1800 ski resort is a great place to spend the extra energy gathered by indulging yourself in the spa. It provides diverse sports activities that are perfect summer alternatives to skiing and snowboarding. These sports include tennis and wall climbing, and there is also a high-altitude golf course with the greens that are made alive by the summer sun. If those sports suggestions don't appeal to you, you can simply go for a hike on one of the resort's footpaths to admire the beautiful nature of the region.

For a totally rustic and romantic setting, head for the Arc 1950 ski resort. Since it is one of the highest ski resorts in the heart of the French Alps, magnificent snow-covered mountain ranges and other breathtaking sceneries can be seen and, as you stare at the immensity, it doesn't take much luck to catch at least a glimpse of a kestrel. The kestrels are some of the world's most colourful and elegant falcons, and their graceful ballet in the summer ski can only add to the romanticism of the Arc 1950.

There are other points of interest in Les Arcs, including the villages and towns of Seez, Hauteville-Gondon, Vulmix, and Valezan. They outline the art and architecture currents throughout France's very rich history. To visit these villages and towns, a certain fee is to be paid but transportation between each of them is completely free. You cannot have a full experience of Les Arcs without trying the cabriolet at least once but you have, here again, other options to choose from: lifts and funiculars can also transport you from one town to the other.

In Les Arcs, France, accommodations are as diverse as they are plenty. All types of lodging are available: hotel rooms, apartments, chalets, residences, etc. will provide you the perfect place to rest with your beloved, your friends or your family during your mountain vacations. In France, accommodating means more than providing a bed and, in Les Arcs, you will find an extensive choice of restaurants and apr's-ski (apr's-biking) venues to complete your French experience!

Over 100 runs in Les Arcs alone and about 50 lifts (cable cars, gondolas and drag lifts) are taking skiers to their respective slopes. And if the 200 kilometers of runs of Les Arcs are not enough for you, with one ski pass you can access the 425 kilometers of descents for beginners, intermediates and experts offered by the Paradiski area.

Five villages in fact form the resort of Les Arcs resort, each identified by its altitude: Arc 1600, Arc 1800, Arc 1950, and Arc 2000. The lowest one is Bourg Saint-Maurice, where the international train station is located. From there, skiers can ride the Arc-en-ciel funicular to access Arc 1600 in the heart of the Paradiski area in just seven minutes. The other four resorts are pedestrian resorts accessible directly from the slopes,

The maintenance of the slopes for beginner skiers in Les Arcs is exceptional. In fact, beginners are probably the luckiest as their slopes are groomed regularly and are in perfect shape throughout the day. There are many nursery slopes and, because of the direction of the beginner slopes, sunshine warms the skiers all day long. Les Arcs 1600 and Les Arcs 2000 are said to have the easiest beginner runs and also the fewest waiting lines

Probably partly for that reason, the ski and summer resort of Les Arcs has recently been awarded the "Famille Plus" label, from the Ski France organization. This certificate guarantees high quality facilities suitable for children and their parents during mountain holidays in Les Arcs. To obtain the label, resorts must welcome children from the age of 18 months the age of at least 12 years, provide suitable practical facilities for families, organize a range of suitable activities, encourage the discovery of the mountain environment and resort life, develop a family policy and make safety a top priority.

Intermediate skiers are also well treated in Les Arcs. They have plenty of groomed runs to keep them busy as well. The Peisey Vallandry run even gives intermediate skiers the chance to go into the backcountry on some nicely groomed trails. Some of the intermediate runs can be combined into longer pistes but to do, so you must get a map before you arrive. If you do plan on going to the backcountry, be sure that you have the piste and topographical maps with you at all times"unprepared skiers have been lost out here for days.

The expert runs accessible right from your doorstep are amazing. The trails are both plentiful and always have just the right amount of powder to keep you going. For skiers who like to ski under a tree cover, Villaroger and Peisey Vallandry are two of the better-forested runs. It’s in the Aiguilles Rouge area, right above Arc 2000, that the most black runs are found, but make sure you are indeed an expert before daring to ski in this area.

Les Arcs accommodations are nice and cozy, and also very well suited for families. Les Arcs counts numerous residences offering apartments of all sizes and hotels of all categories. Whatever type of accommodation you choose, chances are that you will give in to the temptation of the trails and get out early every morning.
