Ankara, The Hidden Gem Of Turkey?
by Devine Gilbert, Dev
More modest in terms of both geographical size and population density, Ankara is only Turkey's second biggest city, following Istanbul. Turkey holidays are frequently limited to the beautiful beaches or to the rich cultural centre, Istanbul - formerly Constantinople - and Ankara can be overlooked, but for a slice of something different, Turkey's capital has much to offer.

For the greater part, Ankara's populace consists of civil servants, students and academics, which immediately gives the city a different kind of atmosphere. The many universities in Ankara furnish the city with a variety of cultural and artistic occasions, from classical concerts to exhibitions of modern art, and ensure the continual expansion of the city's artistic heritage.

Ankara is also the proud host of the Turkish State Opera and Ballet which provides the city's three major venues ? The Ankara Opera House, Leyler Gencer Sahnesi and Operet Sahnesi ? with a constant stream of new and innovative performances. Ankara boasts a further four concert halls, five professional classical orchestras and a plethora of annual festivals of cinema, theatre and music.

Aside from the strong classical conventions here, folk traditions are also showcased and celebrated on a regular basis, in bars, restaurants, student venues and small theatres. This side of the city is easily unearthed whilst wandering the lively and vibrant streets after dusk. Ankara's bustling restaurants are also brim full of Turkish gastronomic delights with a particular penchant for fresh fish dishes. Around Cankaya two of the most loved restaurants are Azdenik Azdenik and Lazoli, where you might also like to sample some of the city's best Raki ? an anise flavoured spirit, often served as an aperitif. Orgunlar Street plays host to restaurant and bar Sudem where you can sample some Turkish classical music alongside the cuisine.

From archeological remains to a history of war, Ankara's many museums will provide both enlightenment and inspiration in telling the story of Ankara's spotted and colourful history, though if the weather's fine it may be that a stroll in one of the many green spaces would be preferable. Kugulu park is best known for the swans which grace its grounds, given as a gift from the Chinese government and Altinpark is a frequent site for outdoor and indoor exhibitions of all kinds. Ataturk Forest Farm and Zoo also provides a delightfully entertaining day out, particularly for those travelling with children.

To see a different side to Turkey, to take a closer look at its administrative heart, to get a glimpse of a new sector of Turkey's vast and varied cultural heritage, Ankara could be the destination you've been searching for if you're hunting Turkey holidays. - try Fly Monarch for deals on flights.
