So even though hotel prices have risen 15% in Houston, prices are still not as expensive as in other major metropolitan areas. Food follows a similar trend, with average restaurant prices well below the national average.

The economy in the Lone Star state has been helped by low, but steady housing prices. Reasonably priced houses are drawing people from other parts of the country. This helps the local economy.

Also, oil is a big part of business in Texas. High oil prices over the summer meant big profits for Texas-based oil companies. This has had a trickle-down effect, especially in Houston.

The hurricane that struck Houston was devastating, but the people who are there helping to rebuild are also putting dollars into the economy.
