The Pen Maketh The Man!
by Nicck, Nic
Match the Pen to the Personality

A pen is more than just a writing instrument or accessory. It is a highly emblematic possession that speaks volumes about the person who owns it. Pens carry very significant perceptions.

Does the gift carry a message?

The story is known to all who hold any interest in pens and writing instruments. Needless to say, there are several stories surrounding the stellar luxury pen brand and each one claims to be the ?real Waterman? story. My favourite Waterman story, the one I believe to be the closest to reality is that Lewis Edson Waterman once lost an insurance sale deal because the fountain pen he used sputtered and gravely malfunctioned, leaving an unsightly blot on the deal papers. Waterman was distraught and annoyed that his deal failed to swing because of a bothersome pen. He resolved to create a pen that guaranteed smooth functioning and thus, the Waterman pen came into existence. The beauty of it all is that Waterman succeeded. Waterman pens are famous, not just for their sleek and beautiful designs but more importantly because the ink flows smoothly and consistently, making for a satisfying writing experience.

The first thing that you notice about is how sleek, smooth and flexible the nib is. Ink flows cleans and smoothly over paper and never gives the feeling of being stiff. The nibs of Waterman pens are often designed with precious metals, gold and silver worked into the nibs, giving them an air of opulence, and precision. There are many styles available in Waterman pens ? the Edson, the Phileas, the Hemisphere, the Serenite and the Carene are just a few. In 1983, a special edition pen marking the 100 year anniversary of Waterman was released. It was called the Man 100, and interestingly, Fran?ois Mitterrand, former president of France responsible for commissioning a glass pyramid to be built in front of the Louvre, was in the habit of carrying two of these everywhere he went.

The is perfect for the man who is not afraid to take risks and is constantly searching for innovation and novelty in all that he does.
