As with most things, finding the right match is no easy feat. You have to keep in mind that a trip to the dentist is a milestone for your children. The odors, the tools, the sound, the whiteness of the room, the oddly-shaped chair can all but overwhelm you little child. Hence, it is mighty important to take your time in finding the right dentist for your child. You need to be able to find someone you are very comfortable with and is able to provide the kind of service you are looking for. And since we are talking about dental care for your most precious child, experience speaks volume. Children, especially young ones, can be tricky patients and you need to be able to find a dentist who can be patient with their young patients.
Your best bet is to find a Pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist is one who specializes in the care of infant's, children's and teenager's teeth. These are dentists who have undergone additional 2 to 3 years of training in order to meet the special needs of these age groups. Included in their training is how best to make a child more comfortable during the procedure. They have also invested more resources in making their clinics more inviting to children.
As a parent, you need to conduct a thorough search for the right dentist. Visiting clinics and conducting ocular inspections can be very helpful, too. While visiting clinics, asking the following question can help you pick the right dentist:
1. How long has this particular dentist been practicing and how many years of that have been spent working with children?
2. Does his/her clinic make the children more at ease? Does it have toys, children's books, or drawing materials in the waiting room to keep children preoccupied while awaiting their turn?
3. Are they dressed the part? Will he or she wear something that puts the child more at ease? For example, if the dentist wears a face mask with children's illustrations rather than a white face mask, it may help the child relax.
4. Will the dentist allow you to be present during the treatment? Having a parent close by can help the child be more relaxed and comfortable.
5. Is the dentist able to put the child at ease? Is he using techniques to help ease the child's anxiety? Techniques may include doing a ?Tell & Show? wherein in the dentist names and shows a dental instrument and shows how it works and tells what it does.
6. Is the dentist generous with praise? Saying something good or giving a reward can help make the trip to the dentist more rewarding and inviting.
7. How does the dentist deal with problems? Children sometimes misbehave during a visit. The dentist may need to take action to prevent injury. In this situation, the first thing to do is to speak calmly and firmly to the child. If this does not stop the child, or if the child needs to be physically held back, you should know in advance and perhaps help. If you feel your child may act up, talk to your dentist in advance about how to deal with the situation.
These are but just a few helpful tips that can aid your decision-making. Finding the perfect dentist can be an exhausting journey but also very rewarding. It can spell the difference between a traumatic experience and a pleasant one. First impressions do last, after all.
