In the last years a new problem seemed to be occurring. Media considered it a huge disaster and a threat for human kind. They realized that more than two-thirds of the globe was at risk of being infected with the bird flu virus called H5N1. It was also noticed that for people that got infected the chances of survival were 50-50%. The statistics come and prove this phenomenon agreeing with the fact that half of the affected people have died. That is why specialists required the development of vaccines and a stockpile of medicine.
The doctor called Robert Webster which developed the vaccine that is supposed to be used in case of an outbreak also agreed that if the virus will mutate and if it will be able to transmit among humans it will mean a global catastrophe.
For a while this problem disappeared from the headlines. Even so there is a chance for this problem to reoccur. At it surely did. In a short period after the media began to forget about this problem new cases have been registered. The registered poultry outbreaks were the cause of low levels of temperature and humidity.
New researches proved some new possibilities of virus spreading. These studies talked about a case of an Indonesian family that was affected by the bird flu causing virus called H5N1. It is known that the eight members of the family got infected because one member got the virus from an affected poultry and spread it to the others.
Another case that has to be mentioned is the case of a woman in Jakarta and his ten year old nephew. It is believed that the woman developed the bird flu virus after she used tainted fertilizer in her garden. It is also know that even if he developed the same problem as his aunt, the young boy had no contact with birds or the garden. Taking the disease from its aunt is the medical opinion.
Doctors also believe that the virus mutates. They can tell that by noticing the symptoms and comparing them to the symptoms registered at the first case in 1997. No we are seeing less diarrhea symptoms and in countries such as Indonesia the mortality rate is much higher. Other symptoms such as fever, aches and coughing and shortness of breath are seen as the health problem progresses.
Until know it is good that H5N1 did not obtained to ability to easily affect humans or to easily spread among them. Even so it is recommended a close monitoring of this problem because if it gets out of control the risk for a global pandemic is high.
Though bird flu has been around for a long time, more recently, it first occurred in Hong Kong in 1997 claiming 18 lives. Since then, with each passing year, this disease has been spreading from one country to another killing birds and humans alike.
The bird flu though not an epidemic for humans yet, but for some species of birds, it is probably the worst thing that can happen. The effect is so potent that a mortality rate of 100% has been recorded, with the infected birds dying in less than 48 hours.
Bearing in mind these stats, and the number of human cases that have been emerging on a daily basis, it is just a matter of time before a 'new and improved' lethal virus is born. And considering the bouts of outbreaks all over the world, it looks as if a global outbreak is very close.
Hence, let us introspect and ask ourselves, "Are we prepared to be able to face this threat in due course and destroy the disease before it destroys us?"
Well, the answer hangs in a dilemma!
With that in mind, a lot has been said about the 'human spirit' and how it always takes a stand during trying times. In that light, now is the right time to shake it up and get it ready for an epic battle. But facing such adversity is not going to be easy. Therefore, we need to be equipped with the right weapon. And by the looks of it, right now, no other weapon appears to be as potent as Tamiflu that can help with the counter attack.
Having said that, Tamiflu cannot be effective if it is not available at the right time, therefore, loading our personal arsenal with Tamiflu now will probably be the most effective offensive in restraining the bird flu.
Lastly, the fight against the H5NI Avian Influenza will be quite an episode. And this time, man does not have the liberty to lose, as that would bring death everywhere. To ensure that, proper action plan and precautionary measures have to be implemented immediately. In that regards, drugs like Tamiflu have to be publicized about and measures devised to make it available to every household. Only then do we stand a chance to win this battle.
