There are several types of universities with religious affiliations. Some were founded by members of a certain faith, but have become basically secular over the years. While the religious traditions are still evident, many people of different faiths attend these schools. A major example of this is The University of Notre Dame.
There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a college. Many students search for a school with a religious affiliation. Almost every religion and religious denomination can be found somewhere. Other schools make religion a serious part of their curriculum, making it a requirement that students take some religious education classes along with their general classes. Though people of different denominations might attend these schools, most, if not all, of the students practice the same religion (i.e. Christianity).
So, just because your religion differs from the religious affiliation of a particular school that should not automatically cause you to cross it off your list. If they have a program that you are interested in, then it is worthwhile to find out what student life is like there. Are you required to receive some sort of religious instruction? You might find that aside from a place of worship on the campus, there is no mention of religion in the curriculum.
And then there are a handful of schools that teach students how to be leaders in their specific faith. Rabbinical schools teach students to lead Jewish congregations while Catholic priests get their start in a seminary. Many times, a school with a religious affiliation will have a program for those who want to take leadership positions in their faith community as well as more secular programs for students who want to complete a traditional college degree. In fact, many schools with religious affiliation are known for their quality and many people of different faiths attend.
