Christ the Redeemer rests on the tip of Corcovado Mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park ignoring the Brazilian Capital, Rio de Janeiro. The figurine of Jesus Christ is situated at the top of 700m of the Corcovado Mountain. This statue of Jesus Christ, embracing arms as if it is embracing entire humankind is the most prominent landmark in Brazil. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon for Rio and Brazil. The 38m tall statue, the tallest in the world is made of metal, permanent solid and soapstone weighs 635 tones. Styled by Brazilian builder Heitor de Silva Costa and built by French sculptor Paul Landowski, it is one of the world's well known monuments. It took five years to build and inaugurated on October 12, 1931. It is now recognized as the recent Seven Wonders of the World.

In the period of 1850's, a catholic priest, Pedro Maria Boss, suggested to create a statue of Jesus Christ on the top of the Corcovado Mountain. The financial help was asked from the Princess of Isabel to build a great statue of Lord Jesus Christ which was considered as a religious icon and is recently recognized as a part of recent seven wonders of the world. Initially this idea was ignored and nobody bothered to create this great sacred monument, but later on in 1921, the figurine was ultimately built by the Catholic Circle of Rio, when the actual need and offer for a huge milestone and a sacred memorial was sincerely considered.

Then was the problem of finances, as to who will fund for this huge historical and sacred sculpture and to resolve this problem as well to gain a great fame a group of citizens planned an event for about seven days through which a large amount of donation was collected hugely from the Brazilian Catholics. The people were even requested to sign if they were in favor of creating the huge statue of Christ. Along with funds and signatures, there were suggestions pouring in for the design of the statue of Jesus Christ, a few recommended that there must be a cross of Christ along with Jesus Christ's statuette, others had an idea to build an statue of Jesus holing the earth in his secure hands, all the suggestions were keenly studied on, but lastly a statue of Jesus Christ with open arms was opted. With all the difficulties the figurine was ultimately built on the peak of 700m high Corcovado Mountain and recently is saluted as one of the seven wonders of the world.

You can easily get to see this amazing wonder of the world by simply flying to the Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro and book a hotel well ahead of time as Rio is a demanding town. Public transports are the best modes of travel to Corcovado Mountain. The rest of the mount up to the idol can be done by elevators, escalators or by climbing up 222 steps!
