Stop Your Kids From Overspending Now
by Alix Montoya, Ali
Are your kids overwhelming you with credit cards stretched out to their limits? They might be spending too much on stuff sold to them by marketing tactics used by capitalists targeted especially on gullible kids. Nowadays, kids spending money is already a given, but what can you do to curb all these enthusiasm?
As a parent, there are many ways for us to keep our kids from weighing heavily in our pockets. We could strip away their credit card access altogether and banish them to a friend-less, phone-less, Internet-less Amish existence. Although, there is an alternative that wouldn't end up with your kids hating you forever, and here are just a few of them.
You have to show your kids that money doesn't fall magically from the skies, it is earned. If your kids are little, you can try giving them a couple of responsibilities around the house and then reward them for a job well done. If they're a little bit older, you can ask them to find a job or start their own business, I hear New Hampshire craft shows are a great way to do that.
Tell them to save up. That's right. Sit them down and talk to them about having bank account and all the jolly good things that come with it. Tell them all about interests and how this increases their savings. Or you could also try and get them to start a college fund for their future. It might surprise what they can do with it.
Keep a budget. And what better way to teach them about this than by letting them join in on the fun while you're doing your own budgeting. You are doing your own budgeting, right? Well, if you're not, do it with them. It's a good way to lead by example.
Teaching them responsibility when it comes to handling money is one of the best things that you, as a parent, can teach your child. Believe me, it's going to save you and your future adult kids a lot of trouble if you did.
