Essentials In A Burn Injury
by Jan Camille Canivel, Jan
Around 2.4 million people suffer from this injury on a yearly basis. Out of the 2.4 million persons that are reported to have suffered this injury, 650, 000 of them were treated and 75,000 of them acquired hospital care.

Meanwhile, in the 650,000 victims who were hospitalized, 20,000 of them were severely burned over 25% of their body's flesh.

There are three different categories of burns. The three are categorized due to the extent of the tissue damage. The three categories of burns are first-degree burns, second-degree burns, and third-degree burns.

First Degree Burns
First degree burns are burns that only affect the topmost layer of the skin called epidermis.

Most often, it is obtained by people due to a short contact with moist or dry heat, and chemicals. It can be a result of friction or too much exposure from the sun. The usual causes of heat that can result to first degree burns are cigarettes, hot beverages, hot water, and hot grease. First degree burns are minor burns which can be cared for at home.

Second-Degree Burns
Second degree burns are burns that affect the epidermis and the dermis, the deep layers of a person's skin. Almost all second degree burns are caused by a short contact with hot liquids, chemicals, flames, or by extreme sunburns. Thermal burns are burns which are caused by heat. Meanwhile, scalds are burns which are caused by steam of hot liquids.

A person should go to a doctor right away if the burn was obtained on the delicate areas of the body like feet, face, genitals, and hands. In addition, seeing a doctor is a must for a person who received second degree burns that covered an area bigger than two to three inches due to an electrical source.

Third-Degree Burns
Third-degree burns, also known as full thickness burns, destroy both the epidermis and the dermis. This type of burn results to permanent scarring, and persons who receive third-degree burns show loss of keratin as well as body hair. This is the most serious type of all burns. In almost all cases, third degree burns are caused by being in contact with fire flames, scalding liquid, chemical and electrical sources, and any object that has been hot for a long period of time.
