Give Your Resume A NZ Flavour - Part 1
by Samuel Goodall, Sam
If you're migrating to New Zealand, it's vital that you update your resume to help you have a higher chance of getting that dream job. New Zealand resumes tend to include more information. Both employers and professional recruiters prefer to receive more information than a traditional UK resume. In a sense, it's best to 'kiwify' your resume before you start looking for that dream job.
You've just found your dream job advertised in New Zealand and your experience meets the criteria; it's time to get your resume into a consultancy where you can secure yourself an interview or directly in front of the employer. Although, before you do so, think about this, if you found your dream job through a worldwide announcement, then it's probably someone else's dream job too, and your resume will only be one of the many that are being reviewed for the position. Yet, if you were to ask 10 people on what goes into a good NZ resume, you would probably get various different answers! The goal of this article is to hopefully provide some useful tips on what to include in your resume to appeal to the New Zealand audience.
Your resume is generally the first point of contact and should quickly give the reader a good indication of your skills and background in a quick and easy-to-read format. It should entice the reader into calling you up and talking with you further and thus helping you to secure an interview and get one step closer to your dream job. But do be aware that you could be the perfect person for the job, but if your resume is unorganised and extracting data is difficult, then you'll be letting your dream job slip away and lose that chance of an interview. So where should you start?
First and foremost, your CV will get no more than a few minutes to sell you so it should be clear and easy to understand at a glance and contain the relevant information.
Make sure to include your full name, address and contact details are clearly listed on your resume so you can be contacted quickly. This may sound obvious to you, but it's often these small details that are overlooked. If you are in UK, try and provide contact details for both UK and NZ if you have them coupled with an up-to-date email address which is important in this sort of situation.
