[C696]City Under The Sea
by Douglas Scott, Dou
San Diego is a coastal Southern California city located in the south western corner of the continental United States. It lies just north of the Mexican border. The first European to visit the region was Portuguese explorer Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo sailing under the Spanish Flag, who sailed his flagship, the San Salvador, from Navidad, New Spain.

San Diego has a fairly large gay population and gay culture. The annual Gay Pride Parade usually draws crowds in excess of 100,000 people.

The Gas lamp Quarter in downtown San Diego is where the city's nightlife is. Some would say that before the Gas lamp hit its stride in the mid-1990s, San Diego really did not have much of a night life. From martinis at Martini Ranch, to dancing at Tsunami Beach Club, nightlife in the Gas lamp Quarter is about as lively as it gets.

The San Diego nightlife scene, including lounges and bars, has never been as vibrant as it is today. The clubs now bring some of the worlds best DJs, boast fabulous decor, and cater to a growing range of beautiful patrons. Aside from the large night clubs in the city, bars are not to be overlooked for affordable, fun nightlife in San Diego. Those seeking to avoid the crowds of the bars, as well as the sometimes over whelming energy of the nightclubs, can make any night magic by grabbing a table for some VIP bottle service at one of the many fine lounges.

The Old Town, now a state-designated historic park showing the citys Mexican heritage. Old adobe houses surround court yards overflowing with bougainvilleas, weathered fountains, and crowds dressed in striking colours. There are over thirty restaurants to choose from, along with a number of rancho-themed hotels, specialty shops, and art galleries. For a thrilling twist, visit some of the communitys famous haunted places, such as the Whaley House and the Villa Montezuma.

The area also offers countless cultural attractions, from trolley tours to historical sites, like the Victorian-age settlement Heritage Park. Several times a year, the park explodes in music to celebrate cultural festivals and holidays, drawing revellers from all over.

The San Diego Sea World was the first Sea World in the world. You can see first hand various types of animals such as orca whales, beluga whales, a pilot whale, polar bears, dolphins, penguins, manatees, and much more. When it comes to the rides they are short and slightly disappointing.
