Hawaii's Very Own President-Elect, Barack Obama!
People from Hawaii are understandably excited about the outcome of this year's historic Presidential election. Barack Obama, soon-to-be 44th President of the United States of America, was born in the islands and has strong local ties.
Since the election, Hawaii residents have seen a sudden surge in interest in all things Obama, with Obama-related tours and promotions popping up all over the place!
GoHawaii.com, Hawaii's official tourism site, has added an entire section devoted to Barack Obama, at gohawaii.com/obama, that encourages visitors to Hawaii to check out the President-elect's favorite places to golf, eat, even bodysurf!
The site lists local favorites like Rainbow Drive-In, serving ono plate lunches and slushies since 1961, and Sandy Beach (Sandy's to the locals), a popular bodysurfing spot on the east side of Oahu, as well as famous visitor attractions like the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor and Hanauma Bay, offering scenic views of the big, blue Pacific Ocean and some of the best snorkeling on the island.
(Fun fact from the GoHawaii Obama site: Did you know that Barack Obama used to work at the Baskin-Robbins on South King?)
L&L Drive-Inn, or L&L Hawaiian Barbeque as it's known on the mainland, has a new, limited edition Barack Obama ?Year of the Ox? T-shirt in the school colors of Obama's high school alma mater Punahou. President-elect Barack Obama was born in 1961, the Year of the Ox according to the Chinese zodiac.
The blue and yellow shirt sports a colorful cartoon Ox with bulging biceps and a tattoo that reads, ?Hawaii? and ?Punahou 1979,? the year Obama graduated. The T-shirt can be bought from the company's website at for $15.00.
And finally, in keeping with our foodie-centric take on Obama-mania here in the islands, if you're going to be on Oahu, stop by the Chowder House at Ward Warehouse, and you'll see a sign on display in the restaurant's front window with Barack Obama's face on the cover of Time magazine and a caption that reads, ?As a student in Honolulu, Senator Obama dined here often.?
People in Hawaii are proud of Barack Obama's historic accomplishment, and it shows!
Until next time,
