What Do You Mean By Cosmetic Dentistry
by Fadhrick Pickaso, Fad
Cosmetic dentistry has gained immense popularity over the years. There are more and more people who resolve to cosmetic dentistry for treatment of their teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can be easily defined as a discipline which involves the changing of the appearance of someone's oral cavity to give a more desired look. Cosmetic Dentistry not only involves alteration of the appearance but it also includes the treatment of any kind of disease that is related with the teeth. The disease, organic, oral or structural, can easily be prevented as well as treated with the help of cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is an advanced science which helps the patient to alter his/her mouth to resemble anyone's appearance. Many people go for cosmetic dentistry to get a smile matching the smile of their screen idol or favorite sports person. Cosmetic dentistry has many options of treatments. The most common sub-fields of cosmetic dentistry include the following -

1)Whitening of the teeth - whitening the tooth is the most common kind of Cosmetic dentistry. By the help of this one can lighten the discolored teeth. Discolored teeth are often an embarrassment and can even lead to social rejection. This procedure helps one gain confidence.
2)Enamel shaping - by the help of this procedure one can improve the appearance of the teeth. In this procedure the contouring enamel is removed to gain a better appearance. However the enamel that is removed is irreplaceable and can sometimes expose the calcium containing part of the tooth that is underneath the enamel. This procedure is also known as odontoplasty, enameloplasty, slenderizing, recontouring, stripping and reshaping.
3)Bonding of the teeth - as the name suggests this type of cosmetic dentistry includes bonding of the cracked and the chipped teeth. In this process a dental composite material resembling enamel is applied to the surface of the tooth and later is sculpted to give it a good shape. After that it is hardened and then polished.
4)Veneers - this procedure is used to close the gaps between the teeth or hiding the discolored teeth which did not benefit from the whitening. In this procedure ultra thin laminates that are custom made are bonded to the teeth. This procedure is gradually gaining immense popularity.

Cosmetic dentistry is an excellent option for tooth related woes. However one should be very careful while choosing a dentist. There are numerous dentists and all of them claim to hold high expertise. One should always double check the efficiency of the dentist before availing his service.
