Intertrigo Treatment Tips
by Juliet Cohen, Jul
Intertrigo is a yeast infection of skin folds caused by Candida albicans. Intertrigo is facilitated by moisture trapped in deep skinfolds where air circulation is limited. An intertrigo usually develops from the chafing of warm, moist skin in the areas of the inner thighs and genitalia, the armpits, under the breasts, the underside of the belly, behind the ears, and the web spaces between the toes and fingers. The skinfolds are areas where skin rubs against skin. Intertrigo is an itchy rash that can get infected with germs or yeast. It usually affects people who are overweight or who have diabetes. Intertrigo develops from mechanical factors and secondary infection. Heat and maceration are central to the process. Opposing skin surfaces rub against each other, causing erosions that become inflamed.

Sweat, feces, urine, and discharge may aggravate intertrigo in both adults and infants. Intertrigo has no predilection, other than that from anatomic differences. Intertrigo is common in warm, moist climates. Intertrigo may also be seen in people who must stay in bed or who wear medical devices that may trap moisture against the skin, such as artificial limbs, splints, and braces. Intertrigo is characterized by a red or reddish-brown rash. The affected skin will often be very raw and may itch or ooze. Yeast or bacterial infection can be treated with topical or oral medications. Topical steroid creams hydrocortisone is beneficial in relieving the pain and symptoms of the infection but does not cure the infection. Keeping the area of the intertrigo dry and exposed to the air can help prevent recurrences

Patients should wear light, nonconstricting, and absorbent clothing and should avoid nylon and other synthetic fibers. Using antibacterial soap, surrounding the skin with absorbent cotton or a band of cotton fabric, and treating the skin with absorbent body powders and even antiperspirants will all help prevent future occurrences. Keep skin cool and dry. Use a fan or air conditioning as needed. Try to expose affected skin to air twice a day for about 30 minutes each time. Do not wear tight shoes or clothing. Wear a bra that has good support. Wear clothes made with absorbent fabrics. Do not wear nylon or other manmade fibers. Do not use creams and lotions. They can trap wetness and cause skin soreness. Weight loss and frequent moving of the body are often helpful.
