[C731]Clenching And Grinding Teeth
by Syamack, Sya

NighttimeClenching & Grinding of Teeth:

Itis my own observation that nowadays about 85% of all adults clench and grind theirteeth in their sleep.  One may not thinkabout the deleterious effects of this phenomenon until he realizes what theconsequences are on the masticatory apparatus (teeth, muscles and jaw joint).

Normalchewing places about 68 lbs/sq inch of pressure on the back teeth. If youintentionally clench your teeth you may increase that force to about 150 lbs/sqinch.

However,an individual who clenches and grinds their teeth subconsciously at night canexert pressures of upwards of 1200 lbs/sq inch momentarily. That is equal to anindustrial grinding machine!  This suddenspike in the amount of pressure can fracture teeth and damage the jaw joint(TMJ) over time.  The continuous workingof the muscles of the jaw and face results in their hypertrophy (increase insize as result of exercise).

Anotherless significant but noticeable side effect of clenching and grinding islocalized growth of bone on the sides of the jaw and middle of the palate.  These bone growth which are referred to asTori (plural for Torus) are benign in nature, but they can grow to aconsiderable size, interfere with eating and irritate the overlying gums.

Finallylet us mention that one of the causes of having sensitive teeth is para functionalclenching and grinding.  Here is themechanism:  When you grind your teethwhile they are locked into each other, you start bending and flexing them rightat the gum line (point of their exit from anchoring bone).  Since our teeth are not very flexible theystart breaking down and losing small bits of tooth substance (enamel &dentin) from their necks.  This erosionand loss of protective enamel can render teeth sensitive to cold andbrushing.  If erosion continues untreatedfor a long time, it can also impinge on the pulp chamber (nerve) in the toothand cause its demise, requiring root canal therapy.

Themost common treatment offered by dental professionals for night time clenchingand grinding of teeth is an appliance called Night Guard.  Night Guard is a horseshoe shaped piece ifacrylic that covers the surface of the teeth and separates them duringgrinding.  Therefore it prevents teethfrom rubbing against each other.  It alsoprotects the jaw joint (TMJ) by repositioning it and also by stretching themuscles therefore decreasing the amount of force that they can generate.

It really doesn't make any sense, isn't it ?

If you had a backache won't you entirely focus on to your back? Or, if you had a headache won't you simply focus on to your head? But of course, if you are suffering from high blood pressure , all you want to do is lower it , am I correct?

Well, that is an approach I think are ruining the traditional health system.

Muscle is not an island, neither a nerve nor a bone or a limp. Each and every cell in our body is connected to one another. Every single cell (millions of them) in our body has the exact same DNA structure, but the cell outside our body does not have the exact DNA structure.

Isn't that amazing? (maybe I'm getting a little head of myself).

At lest, our body works as a whole. I took my 8 years old daughter with me to the chiropractor today. He said that one leg had appeared to be a little shorter than the other. After he adjusted her, they were both even. No problem at all.

...because we treated it in time!

He said that it often happened to all kind of kids games. She probably might not have noticed it for years. But she would not be able to carry her body correctly. She would definitely start to put wrong weight on a wrong muscle or bone.

And then - maybe after 30, 40, or 50 years - she may have began to experience knee problems. Or back problems. Or hip problems. Even neck problems, headaches or TMJ.

It is rather very likely that something similar might have been occurred to you when you were a kid. It actually happens to most of us. Even the very small issues tends to set our body out of balance. It might not be big might be not noticeable. But slowly and steadily we do add on to it.

All of a sudden, the pressure does increases and something comes up.

We generally do not fall sick out of the blue, unless there we face an accident. There is something that kept on brewing below. Maybe for years.

So, here I come back to my original question...

"Why do I recommend exercising muscles that have nothing to do with the problem area?"

Taking TMJ for example. TMJ is a condition where the jaw joints are dislocated or are not in position which causes tension in the jaw muscles. This results in to a horrible headache, drowsiness, blurry vision, inability to eat or talk and many other hundred of symptoms. TMJ cases are usually not the same.

But the solution to the problem is always the same...

I do recommend the special Jaw, Tongue ,Throat and Neck exercises.

Now it's quite obvious to answer as to why do I always recommend the jaw exercises. By strengthening and loosening up the jaws muscles, these muscles often guides the jaw into its healthy natural position.

But why on earth do I recommend throat exercises?

Due to the fact that the throat muscles are directly connected to the jaw muscles. Same is the case with the muscles in the tongue and of course the neck. So, if you do not strengthen these muscles, then their tension will keep pulling the jaw muscles and stop it from becoming a healthy muscles.

The exercise for TMJ is the same as in my stop snoring program. The reason for the same type of exercise for different conditions is that as it occurs in the same area. So, it is important to loosen up the throat muscles in order to make the jaw muscles functional and it is also very important to loosen the jaw muscles in order to make the throat muscles functional and open the throat which leads to cure snoring.

So, I always take it to be an example. I usually focus on to the whole body, and it does not matter as to what type of condition I might be dealing with. In order to cure migraine you do require to train yourself to breath deeply. You should also keep in mind that the muscles controlling your breathing are very strong and flexible.

You should always aim big.

Just like every person affects the other next to it, every cell, every muscle, every bone and every nerve affects the object next to it. As long as it has the same DNA structure (belongs to you), you must deal with it.
