TEFL Courses
by Umar Daraz, Uma
Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Courses are designed to give those who have learned English as a child, the necessary skills to teach English to people who have little or no knowledge of the English Language. TEFL methodologies, principles and concepts are different to those found in a normal classroom environment. A good TEFL course will teach students how to communicate with people who do not speak the English language. Learning, understanding and then teaching methods of communication are key to the success of TEFL courses and the end result, the TEFL teacher.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is referred to in a few different ways. TEFL in simply an acronym:

TEFL – Teach English as a Foreign Language
TESL – Teaching English as a Second Language
TESOL – Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages

Effective TEFL courses will cover (amongst other things); grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, classroom management, teaching approaches (teaching in different cultures). As well as the four skills of speaking, writing, reading and listening. These skills are though merely the foundations. These foundations are absolutely key to ensuring that a teacher constantly deliver the best to their students. How does a teacher deliver a lesson on basic grammar? What terminology will the teacher use? How many grammar rules does a teacher really know? A TEFL course will guide the student through all of this, not only will the student’s own skills improve but their ability to teach others will develop hugely. Because of the way a person learns they are able to use their new found skills to deliver hugely effective lessons. More in depth TEFL courses may focus on specifics such as teaching English to young learners or to business users. The core skills will need to be acquired first though.

A TEFL Courses should ensure that students gather all the necessary skills/foundations to be an effective TEFL teacher. Students should be able to both learn very effectively and enjoy the experience. This learning will then be passed on to that the people that the student will eventually go on to teach. TEFL is a huge amount of fun, whether you are the teacher delivering the lesson or you are the student being taught. This fun element this is a very important part of TEFL teaching.

By the end of a good TEFL course the student should have gained a thorough understanding if the skills required to teach English as a foreign language. The student’s confidence will have developed immensely. These skills are not only essential in the world of TEFL but can also be applied in many other areas.

TEFL is a key that can open up a world of opportunities. The English language is still a much valued commodity all over the globe. The demand to learn English is insatiable and by embarking on a TEFL course you are able to change lives.
