What Makes Phukets Beaches So Special
by Gen Wright, Gen
Travelers come to Thailand for a variety of reasons, but one of the most appealing aspects of the country is its beaches. Although Thailand isn't exactly off the beaten track any more, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to find the perfect beach spot to suit your tastes. The abundance of islands dotted around Thailand's coast means that people are spoiled for choice. Samui, Pha-ngan, Samet, Chang ? the list goes on. But the one that continually draws people in is Phuket.

The Phuket beaches vary greatly in terms of size, cleanliness and popularity. As you might expect, the most popular beaches are often not the most scenic, but there is such a variety of beaches that for every dud, there is at least one shining dining ready to step up.

The most frequented Phuket beach is still Patong Beach, which is a highly popular tourist resort favored by travelers the world over. There is nightlife, restaurants and shopping, but the beach in Patong leaves a lot to be desired.

Not quite as popular but a lot more appealing are the beaches at Kata and Karon. Although the beaches can become crowded during peak times, for the most part they are great areas with long, sandy stretches and stunning, clear waters.

One of Phuket's most beautiful beaches is Mai Khao Beach, which is nothing short of remarkable. If you want privacy, seclusion and unspoiled scenery, you have it all at Mai Khao. It's possible to find your own private haven with nobody around but you. The only problem with this is that the beach is a long way from the center of the island and there are hardly any shops and restaurants around. But still, Mai Khao makes for a great place for a picnic.

A little south of Mai Khao Beach is Nai Yang Beach, which is almost as striking but has the added benefit of more facilities. Nai Yang is also the place to go if you are keen to try out parasailing.

One beach that is often overlooked by travelers is Nai Harn Beach. This makes it all the more appealing, as the scenery is terrific. Expats and locals often frequent this beach on the weekends.

A little-known beach in Phuket is Laem Sing Beach, which is a dainty stretch of sand that makes for a perfect lazy afternoon. On Sundays during high season, Laem Sing is host to the legendary Soundwave Sundays beach parties, which never fails to attract a large crowd of expats, locals and a few travelers.

There is peace and tranquility, there are party beaches and there are those that fall somewhere in between. As you can see, there are lots of Phuket beaches to choose from. Do your homework and pick the one that best suits your needs.
