For a complete holiday in Meghalaya, stay at the lovely Raj-era Pinewood Hotel in Shillong. Then hire a cab for a day and set off for Cherrapunji and Mawsynram. Cherrapunji has its honey. Mawsynram has its rain. Cherrapunji village is 56km from Shillong and 1,300m above sea level. Mawsynram is nearby (55km). Both villages are inconstant cutthroat competition for the highest-rainfall-in-the-world title-Mawsynram is currently de-fending champion. Tucked away in the beautiful hills where clouds reside, the road to Cherrapunji will take you through mountains lined with roaring waterfalls. ?Cloud Point? might tempt you to take a walk in the clouds. The entire region has range of limestone caves very popular with people who like dark places. Krem Mawlah, near Cherrapunji, is 4-5 km long; Mawsynram has a colossal stalagmite formation, locally known as Mawjymbuin. If it reminds you of a shivlingam, don't congratulate yourself for originality. A hub of Khasi culture, Cherrapunji also presents traditional festivals at their colourful best. Don't forget to pick up a jar of orange honey on your way home.

Majuli

A ferry at Nemati Ghat, just off Jorhat in Assam gets you to Majuli; the world's largest river island wit 800 sq km of forest and beach. Majuli's biodiversity creates an ideal homing ground for birds. Its monasteries house priceless relics; music, arts and craft are part of a 500-year cultural heritage. Islanders include Mishing tribals, Ahoms, and Kacharis. Majuli has been proposed as the 21st UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Vijainagar

Three hundred and fifty three days of the year, the only way to get to the little town of Vijainagar in Arunachal's Changlang district is to walk for four days through leech-infested forests of the Namdapha sanctuary. But once a month you can get there in style on the civil sortie from Dibrugarh airport. It's a thrilling 45-minute flight in the cargo hold of an AN32 transport plane. Cost: $ 50.
