Homeopathic Treatments For Autism: An Effective Cure Or A Speculative Remedy?
by Janice Duryea, Jan

Although medicine has advanced vastly in the recent years, the use of homeopathic or natural treatments is still widely popular regardless of the ailment of the disease. Think of disease and there is sure to be a natural or herbal remedy that claims to treat it. For instance, in several countries, it was believed that virgin coconut oil can cure the symptoms of HIV and AIDS. This is obviously a very overwhelming claim, and while there are no studies that prove its actual efficacy, virgin coconut oil is still used to supposed treat the dreaded virus. The advent of homeopathic treatments to cure autism—or at least treat its symptoms—is not surprising at all, considering how no modern and advanced medication can seem to treat the ailment. But unlike the promise of virgin coconut oil (and other similar products), homeopathic treatments for autism can actually work, especially since it has a number of researches to back it up.

But first, what is a homeopathic treatment? This term is culled from homeopathy, which aims to treat a disease by using a substance that produces symptoms similar to the disease it is treating. In essence, these homeopathic remedies are alternative in nature, just like the herbal medicines mentioned above. They are effective in removing the toxic effects of substances in the body, an effect that could be considered as substances canceling out each other due to their similar characteristics.

So why are homeopathic treatments useful against autism?

A number of researches cite toxins as the cause of autism. A study dating back to 1998 stated that autism could be an autoimmune reaction to toxins produced by particular proteins. As long as these toxins exist, there is no chance that a person can recover from the ailment, regardless of how these symptoms are treated. This is why homeopathic treatments work; they remove substances that cause these effects in the body, aiding the body to recover from the ailment. In this case, once the toxins are removed from the body, the antibodies of the immune system will stop attacking these toxins. And once the antibodies stop attacking, the immune system can return to its proper state, canceling out the autoimmune response.

Parents of autistic children who want to try out homeopathic treatments can consult a homeopath in order to given them personalized and specialized remedies. Remember that homeopathic treatments differ from case to case, and a treatment that works for a person would not work on another. Many homeopaths also say that the road to full recovery can be long and, in some cases, difficult. Again, this is a case to case basis.

Many people may see the alternative medicine label of homeopathic treatments to autism as a little off-putting. However, this cannot be helped; the treatments used in the mainstream do not address the numerous possible causes of autism. Mainstream medication treat autism as a mental disorder and that alone, limiting its potential to fully cure the ailment. With homeopathic treatments, the range is higher, and the potentials more promising.
