Safe Driving Tips For When Roads Are Wet And Oily
by Rachel Yoshida, Rac
People many times take driving in the rain for granted. It is just a little water most of the time and usually does not compare to having to drive on the slickness of ice or the aggravation of snow. Water can sometimes be just as dangerous though when people try to drive faster than they should. It really pays to still respect the road and driving safety even if it is just water because of a little rain.

Actually, when there is just a little rain on the roadway it can be just as dangerous as when there has been a lot of rainfall. When it has been a week or so since the last rainfall, oil from all the vehicles traveling on it during the dry time can become quite treacherous when it starts being mixed with water. When there is only a small amount of water it is often not nearly enough to wash the oil away and it makes the pavement very slick. You can run up on a slick spot before you realize it because they are not usually easy to see.

When you hit a slick spot like this it is better not to panic and slam on your brakes. If it is possible you need to try and correct the slide without braking or at least only apply a small amount. When people panic is when they sometimes cause a more serious incident than there might have been if they had just not slammed on their brakes. It is hard to not do this though because it is just a natural response and you only have a split second or two to respond either the wrong way or the right way.

The best way to avoid these kinds of accidents is to just slow down and drive more carefully even if it is not raining hard. We all know that this is the best prevention against hydroplaning when there is a lot of water on the road, but people just do not give it much thought when it drizzles or sprinkles.

It is always important to keep good tires on your vehicle and make sure they are balanced correctly. Many accidents involving weather conditions if you just keep your tires in good shape. Make sure to have your tires rotated every once in a while in between buying new ones. This will ensure you have a much safer ride as well as a smoother one.
