From the earlier days, we have recorded our works in different manuals or journals, which have been read and followed in the later periods of time. Each article or journal written may be the discovery or creation of a lifetime; to formulate them an individual might have gone through extreme limits of pain and hardships. These, important assets may be considered to be documents, which have entries regarding important matters, which could take years to resolve.
If these documents were to be destroyed, then our civilization or certain portion of the society would fall back with progress and at times, may lead to great economic downfall, if the documents contained records to our trade and industry, along with economic laws. Thus, at every cost we must protect these documents carefully so that they are not harmed by individuals or natural disasters. For example, the tsunami that hit the South East Asian coasts had taken away many lives, more importantly it may have destroyed several precious documents.
When such conditions do come, then document drying measures should be considered as early as possible in order to make restoration process simpler, because this is the best solution to recover the important details in those documents, with time the recovering of the documents gets tough as well as tedious. If these document drying measures are to be taken, then we must be very careful to make sure that the document that we are dealing with is not damaged by our force. We must be very careful while trying to recover documents that may have been subject to water contact during document drying, in the process has become vulnerable.
However, we must consider the options that may require document drying; water contact with documents does not occur only when there is a catastrophe, but could take place on any normal day also, so it is better to maintain safety. If we try and carry a document from one place to another on a rainy day, then we might get the document wet by not having covered it properly therefore there is every need for document drying. Even books at library, at our home, or workplace may be damaged due to spilling of water or any other liquid like tea or ink. These liquids are very harmful for paper and degrades its quality in due course of time, thus we should immediately apply document drying measures on it to save the records from being lost.
If at all, document drying measures seem not to work it is better to go for alternate measures, like having the document copied for further reference. At times it may not be possible to copy the entire details in the document manually and at its condition, would not suit it to be done mechanically. To avoid this dilemma we often make copies of documents, while they were being recorded, to make sure that the content is not lost. Thus, it would serve better to be prepared before hand than to rely on document drying to recover, whatever was there in the document.
