Water Damage In Your Yard
by Byron Zoucks, Byr
Many home owners spend considerable amounts of time trying to protect their homes from damage. You, yourself may be monitoring the inside of your home for water damage but have you checked your yard lately? Do you know where the water drainage path is in your yard? The value of your home is based on factors that go well beyond the care and upkeep of the physical structure. Protect your entire investment by preventing water damage to your yard and outdoor spaces.

While water damage to your yard may not cause the same level of damage that water damage inside your home will cause, excess water in your yard can often lead to insect problems and illnesses. In some cases, water problems in your yard can be a sign of plumbing or water problems inside your home. And yes, sometimes water damage will occur in your home because of a freak accident such as pipe breaking, but the majority of water damage occurs because we allow small problems to build up. Your yard may be a small problem waiting to explode.

When preventing water damage to your yard, you should start by removing any standing water. You do not need to rush out and pump the water out of your yard after a rainfall. You can allow the water to be absorbed naturally into the ground. However, if you live in an area that has a large amount of rainfall and notice water pools in the same areas of your yard after each rainfall, you could be inviting water damage. Low spots in your yard that consistently fill up with water can be a breeding ground for mosquitos. These spots could also allow water to move underground and seep under the foundation of your home. Fill any low spots of your yard that consistently collect water to avoid long term water pooling.

Water puddles in your yard may also be a sign that you do not have enough drainage options in your yard. Normally, water seeps through the top soil and is drained from your yard by gravel underground. If you live in area for hard soil or do not have the necessary gravel underneath the soil, you may find yourself with drainage problems. Without proper drainage the water may pool under the top soil and create a dangerous situation for you home or your family. You can add drainage paths to your yard by building the layer of gravel under the top soil or adding drainage paths to your landscaping.

Preventing water damage to your yard can help you maintain the value of your home. Landscaping and lawn maintenance are important to not only the curb appeal and look of your home but for the health of family and building structures as well. Excess water and mud can create pathways for termites and mosquitoes to enter your home, not to mention the damage mud and dirt will make to your carpet. When you think about all the different ways water damage may occur in your home, do not forget about your yard.
