Snoring And Pregnancy: What Is Dangerous?
by Munish Bhardwaj, Mun
Considering the many phases of physical changes that usually occur during the different stages and months of pregnancy, it should not be surprising that women tend to snore during this time. Snoring on a regular basis happens to be one of the physical changes that quite a number of women face. With the average percentage of women that are considered to be habitual snorers is approximately 4%, when it was studied, it showed that there is a large increase in these percentages with at least 30% of women finding themselves to be nightly snorers, by the end of their pregnancy.

Snoring is not a problem that starts to happen from the first week during the pregnancy, but instead it may happen during the second trimester, and is even more common during the third trimester of the pregnancy. The main reason that leads to snoring during pregnancy is the high increase in body mass, especially during the later stages of pregnancy directly due to the natural process of weight gain. When there is an excessive or over excessive amount of weight gain during pregnancy, the chances of snoring increase dramatically.

There are higher chances of the snoring during pregnancy, when the woman has a naturally larger neck area. Whether the woman is pregnant or not, any woman that snores has a larger neck size by approximately 1 cm. and this is even more with the natural pregnancy weight gain. The main reason for snoring is directly related with the thickness of the neck. That becomes a main cause of snoring because of narrowing of the upper airway passages which directly results in inner throat tissue vibration leading to creation of airway obstruction.

Another indirect but serious issue of snoring results in maternal asthma, which is caused by intense swelling and inflammation of the throat airway walls , making breathing, extremely difficult. For approximately 3% to 9% percent of pregnant women, maternal asthma is known to occur, but these numbers are often,( but not always) also associated with the women, who may have had prior asthma issues, even before being pregnant. These types of material asthmatic conditions also lead to becoming a cause for snoring in the long run.

It does not matter as to why you are snoring during your pregnancy, there is becomes imperative to get a control over it. Habitually snoring during pregnancy, have been found to be directly linked to an increasing cases of pregnancy induced hypertension, and even the more immediate dangers of pre-eclampsia.
